Thinking about selling my new 8.

I've had it for about a month...a little over.
Its really slow...i never thought a car would be THAT much slower just because its an automatic.

The car kills my pocket..not because the gas is bad but my gas is HORRIBLE.
im getting 150 miles on a full tank.
plus the car ate a quart of oil already since i had it.
the cars nice but i dont think its worth it.
i paid 9900$ for it...it has 76k miles on the body and the engine has about 36k miles.

im thinking about what i should do.

i cant drive a stick...i just never learned it...so i dont wanna sell this and buy stick to learn its impossible for me.

I wanna sell this car and make back everything i paid for it and also the stuff i did to it..
so far i bought a aem intake..(2 days ago), new heated seat switch, center console lid, and also a tune up kit for 300$.

Do you think i can sell this car for about 11000? give or take a few hundred bucks.

Help me out alittle.

Gas is bad on these cars. The nature of the rotary.

On the oil issue do you understand a Rotary engine is supposed to burn oil?

I keep wondering about how some AT owners complain about a lack of horse power. I haven't noticed it in mine. I'm a little bit slower off the line (all automatic cars of any make are). The 8 makes up allot of the difference in it's superior handling and weight balance (particularly on curvy roads) By your message you apparently have a rebuilt/new engine. I wonder if the tranny or something else was also damaged when the previous owner destroyed/ruined their engine. Red lining the car allot would burn up the tranny pretty good.

I was told redlining it is goood. The tranny feels fine...i noticed my cars faster in automatic than manual mode..it takes off faster.

I think my car will run faster when the tune up kits installed..more power since my car will be running better.

The A/T model has a lower rev limit, than the M/T, to prevent problems with the torque converter/transmission.

^ I agree.......Dont do it. If you didnt know what you were getting into and really have regrets its your call but the car is awesome you just have to deal with its short comings and embrace the qualities that are great.

First of all, your friend bought a GTI. Who cares what he thinks. No one ever asks what kind of a car a little VW psuedo-station wagon is. Nearly every time I stop somewhere people ask me what kind of car my shinka is. Learn to enjoy the fact that not every 17 year old kid for 20 miles has one their parents bought them.

Secondly, unless you're using your car strictly for a quarter-mile track car...who cares who's faster? That crap doesn't matter for 99% of driving. Anyone that falls back on that argument is just overcompensating for something else. lol. You'll get way more enjoyment out of driving the 8 on long, curvy roads than you would on a car that goes super fast in a straight line (which you'll barely ever get to do unless you go to a track).

Lastly, you can drive a stick. Promise. I practiced once for a half hour on someone's car and then went to Boston and drove my new 8 home to PA, and then to work all week. It's easier than you think dude.

tl;dr - don't listen to your idiot friend. enjoy what your car is made for.

Lol @ tl;dr.

But he is 100% right. If you like your car, keep your car. If you don't like it, sell it. It is just that simple.

learning stick is not impossible, i'll teach it to you in 30 minutes...but you have to have a better attitude than thinking you can't learn it. Automatic sports car are pointless.

150 a full tank? i get around 225 miles in a full tank, you can switch to 87 gas, and next time you have to do something to your car call this guy his name is mario (856-535-4949)he is an excellent rotary mechanic and he chargers way less than the dealer would or just let us know we will be happy to help you.

thanks for all the help...and i wanted to learn stick but no1 would teach me. i didnt wanna buy a car without test driving it first so it sucked..i recently TRIED driving my friends bmw...couldnt get it into first..i was in his work parking lot so i couldnt really give it much gas so i was bitching the pedal alittle.

i honestly think once i fix my gas milage problem and get a few mods itll be faster.

i know its horrible...the spark plugs were only replaced once by mazda when my engine was replaced...that was 36k miles ago..coils and wires were NEVER replaced.

im going to change all 3..from what ive searched they help with gas milage.

i'd sell it.

the 04-05 automatic rx8 is a giant fail.

my 20 year old barely running bmw could outrun one in the 1/4 mile. i ran 15.9 seconds last friday. your rx8 will run 16.5 all day long. in fact, NB miatas out run them too.

should have gotten a manual. your gas mileage wont ever get better than 20mpg to a tank. fyi.

i agree with kersh. there are two reasons you should sell it.

1) the AT 4-port just doesn't have the power that even the later year ATs do.
2) you obviously care what your friend says. even if you get an MT and slap a turbo/SC on it, you're still going to be losing drag races. if this concerns you, go american muscle or something with more base power that is easily tuned for more. this isn't the car for you.

I had friends who used to tell me I had a slow car.

So I got new friends :-).

I suppose it's worth mentioning those same friends continue to be arm chair racers while I have finally started to frequent track events.

The 04 AT is underpowered compared to it's 6 port MT brother. About a 40whp difference.

There's always been a debate between AT and MT and I'm not trying to say one is better. I will just say don't buy a car for the express purpose of beating your buddy on the street. No matter what, there will always be someone faster. If the car doesn't make you happy and you don't enjoy driving it then don't keep it.

I'd be willing to bet you just haven't put the car in the right setting. The first 3 months I owned my RX8 I was trying to keep up with Evo's and STI's which had me pretty bummed. My first mountain drive changed all that.

Best of luck!

You need to take your car in for service under the warranty, I used to get almost 260 per tank and now I'm down to about 200 because I need to change out my spark plugs badly (thank you bhr for the new plugs and wires ;-]).

You may just need new plugs, coils, and wires. That may also explain for some power loss but then again the 04 is only a 4 speed auto where as the 06+ is 6 speed auto.

I think u just need to get it serviced. U also shouldn't have eaten a whole quart in a month...
