Quick License Plate / Insurance Question
Quick License Plate / Insurance Question
Girlfriend lives in VA...she's not sure since her ex dealt with all the car stuff...so i thought i'd ask the smart ppl...
in VA, when you get a new car, do you get your license plates from the dealer or the DMV?
Second question, will the dealer let you drive the car off the lot without insurance?
In tx, you get them from the dealer, and can't leave without Insurance, so i thought i'd ask.
Thanks.

if u can find a car dealer that lets u drive the car off the lot without insurance, then i'm willing to bet u that johnny cochran probably has a law office in a trailer parked right around their corner with people lined up ready to get run over...
the dmv has to assign their available pool of license plate numbers to VINS of registered vehicles. how the heck are they going to know at what time which car license gets assigned to which plate if they don't even know which car is getting sold at any given time or day? <lol>

Liquid, most dealers will handle all of the license paperwork for you. You will most likely leave the lot that day with a temporary tag (paper), and the real plate will come a week or two later. Afterwards she can log on to dmvnow.com and get some personnalized plates if she wants...
And for the second question, yes, she will have to have her insurance in tact. They will usually call the insurance company to verify.

The insurance requirement simply protects the interest of the lienholder, and the dealer is frequently acting as his agent. That, plus ensuring compliance with the sate financial responsibility laws.
