PA Looking for a Rotary Shop in the Philadelphia area

Hi,

My 2008 RX-8 has died and needs the engine rebuilt.
The compression is zero for front & around 3.2 for back. (Whatever that means)

Want a local shop to Bucks County or Philadelphia?

Any idea of costs to rebuilt the engine?

Thanks
Ethan

There are quite a few Pa. members here who maybe can help you out.

The only ones I know about are on this thread.
If you find a rebuilder not on this list, please post it on there.
Thanks.:)

Yes - I am going to try and reach out to Speed Auto Body & Repair.

Any idea of estimated cost?
Please educate me, What has to be replaced when there is no compression in Front and low in back?

Thanks
Ethan

a rebuild depends on what parts are still good. a lot of times you need new rotor housings, sometimes irons and rotors if a seal actually broke off. lost of variables when rebuilding

you can buy a short block from mazda for ~3500 and swap it yourself.

Chrishoky 01-17-2018 06:38 PM

The closest place I know of that does rebuilds is JPR Imports in Blackwood NJ, heard good things from a few other members but never been there myself.

If you can do the motor swap yourself I would personally buy a short block direct from Mazda as stated above or reach out to Kevin at Rotary Resurrection. Those would be my first calls if I were in your situation.

Id estimate between $3k-$6K to get you back up and running.

Here's one from about 5 years ago, Idk if the shops mentioned are still relevant.

Given the way you describe the failure (happened at speed while driving and led to a complete shutdown of the engine), I'm betting the damage to the front rotor is fairly catastrophic. You're probably looking at seals and at least one housing, iron and rotor. That's not going to be a budget <$2000 rebuild. I'd guess you're looking at $4k for parts and labor.

You can search google for "N3H3-02-200R-V0" and find several places around the country selling Mazda reman short blocks for $2900 and up. You'll need about $100 for a gasket set and another $200 for 9 qts of oil and 2.7 gallons of coolant. Add in another few hundred for incidentals (deteriorated hoses, fittings, etc).

IS anyone looking to purchase my 2008 Red Velocity Mazda RX-8 50K?

NotAPreppie 01-18-2018 12:52 PM

If you're serious about selling it, you need to post a separate for-sale thread. You should include a lot of photos of the interior and exterior.

Don't expect to get more than $2000 for it and that's assuming it's in perfect condition.

Ethan I. Shiller 01-18-2018 01:04 PM

I could not post it for sale on this thread.

Plus thanks for your estimate, but thinking around 6-7K,
Yes in perfect condition.

I'll give you 500$ for it

Yep!.

Ok - Let me ask my question another way. Does anyone have a great looking RX-8 for 4K with about 50K.

That's more than the $500.

Thanks

NotAPreppie 01-18-2018 02:36 PM

Good condition Series 1 rolling shells with no engine or bad engines typically go for $1000-$2000. If it's showroom condition inside and out and you find the right buyer, you might get $3000.

have anyone ever used jdm long block from ebay? they generally go for $2k shipped with transmission with about 50k miles or less on them. i have used several for previous honda swap but not too sure about rotary.

sonicsdaman 02-06-2018 06:52 AM

^ don't do it spend ~3500 at a reputable rebuilder

They typically come with one of two warranties:
  1. Startup warranty. Guaranteed to start. That's it.
  2. No warranty at all.

There's a reason for this.

Keep in mind that some engines (including mine) don't even last 50k miles before compression falls below Mazda spec.

trackjunkie 02-06-2018 07:41 AM

wow that bad? i got my car a few months ago from a senior. it has 74k miles on it and i doubt it was ever driven hard. she said it still had original brakes on it and the tires build date was 9 years ago. but i guess i should still get compression check. i was looking into getting a new motor build for track and keep the one in the car for spare, or maybe learn how to rebuilt it once its out of the car.

NotAPreppie 02-06-2018 07:46 AM

The common wisdom on the forum (and who knows if it's true for people with more than 1/2 a brain) is that first rebuilds are usually rebuilt again in fairly short order.

I think Rotary Resurrection has a few engines on eBay for around $3k with no core. If you're looking to keep your existing engine to learn how to rebuild, that might be the most cost effective route.

Otherwise you're looking at a Mazda reman for $3k + $1k core or $4K+ (not including core) from various rebuilders like Banzai, Pineapple, etc.

trackjunkie 02-06-2018 07:53 AM

i have been communicating with pineapple about a track engine build. but i think they use all oem components? and do additional oil mods. the engine porting itself has very little gain for renesis engine? if that's the case, would a new dealer short block be a better option.

Better is relative, based on your expectations.
Pineapple has a very good reputation here.

the oem from dealer would have some type of warranty, even for racing?

sonicsdaman 02-06-2018 08:42 AM

'new' dealership engines are remans (they don't make new engines anymore) and the warranty is only applicable if the dealer installs it themselves
