Moving to NYC --> bring my car?

Hi guys!

I'm might be moving to New York for the next 3 years as a resident at a hospital in east Brooklyn (apparently Mike Tyson's old hood). I'm thinking of living on the western edge of Brooklyn. I realize that driving in Manhattan is a nightmare, how is it in Brooklyn ... do I actually need to drive since the subway is pretty efficient? I'd hate to leave my car for 3 years but at the same time don't want to get it messed up. On a side note, I see tons of nicer vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Land Rovers, etc) parked near the hospital. Thanks guys!

Thoughts?

Well, I don't live in Brooklyn, but I do know that Brooklyn streets aren't as bad as manhattan streets and the train is definitely a good way to get around because parking spaces are hard to find anywhere in New York.

Um DUH! Ever heard of the Poconos?

Dude, don't bring your car to NYC. My bud brought his BMW to NYC for his residency and it got broken into constantly. Also, parking is expensive.

bmw is not a mazda....there are several rotards in the nyc metro area.....we have one of the strongest groups on these boards.....granted brooklyn has its bad parts but im sure you can garage it and if you have time off we always have local get togethers

i personally wouldn't just b/c it's easy enough to get public transportation and having any car is a pain. it's convenient sometimes but they also have those pretty cheap daily zip car rentals or whatever they're called.

that being said, there are plenty that do it and are just fine.

List it all depends what part of BK you moved to... I live in the Bronx, but the part I live in is a good area. i leave my car parked in the street everyday. But City trans isn't the best transportation. I would say only in mahattan it is because of parking. but when ever you want to go somewhere at the drop of a dime you need a car. Plus for those late night you want to go out, you dont want to be on the subway after 1am.

When I lived in Manhattan, I kept my car parked in NJ, and ended up only using it to drive back to the Midwest to see family. The only times I actually drove into the city was when I moved in and moved out and needed to unload or pick-up my stuff. NYC's a great place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit there. It's a big pain and the ass to get in and out of Manhattan. Brooklyn must be easier.

don't forget there are always cabs available if you're out late too.

If you have the funds I would look for an apt in FAR west BKN that includes parking. Most of the new buildings/condos in williamsburg, park slope, or any community along the east river across from manhattan now include parking. It is a great upscale area. Check craigslist there will be a ton.

Thanks for the input guys! What freaked me out is seeing the "Bumper Guards" every third or forth car parked on the street. :(

Those things do well for those who have to parallel park into tight spots...like me. The rear diffuser on my rear bumper is taking a beating cuz of how tight the spots are infront of my house (which is not in brooklyn)

my 2 cents... things you need to consider is where would you be commuting to daily. will you have a garage, and more importantly how the neighborhood is
