looking for MD instructor who wants to help me shift better
hey,
i dont know if its the fact that i just got the AP (more power?) or i didnt have my car for 3 weeks and drove an automatic. but my start shifting from first is really crappy. i constantly get that bump halfway through the shift. im tired of it. is anyone in the d.c. area willing to teach me to shift better? i can shift fine at WOT, but shifting for normal driving in the lower gears (less momentum?) is being a little tricky. |
Whats up bro. I have been driving M/T for only 6 months. Picked up my 8 this January and it is my first M/t. It takes a lil time to get it down pact. It's not hard just practice everyday for a li while and it begins to get easy and becomes natural. No need for an instructor practice makes perfect.
DO alot of into 1st gear and stop that will train you foot work. Once your foot work is set off of 1st gear the rest is easy... G/L bro. |
A tip from a friend who taught me smoother shifting in the 8:
"It's quicker than you think it is." |
Actually, the first to second shift is the one I am least smooth with. It's mostly because the second to first ratio is like 62% while almost all other gears are 70-72% of the previous gear. This makes rev matching/aligning on second a little different than other gears. Then, you match a decently grabby clutch with a low torque engine making it's lowest gear shift and you get can get an uneven shift pretty easily. I don't bog gears but I find 2nd to be the hardest gear to glide into. If I'm paying attention, I can make most shifts smoother than an automatic when I'm just cruising around.
Shifting, provided you are not actually screwing something up, is entirely a feel thing. It would be tough to teach. |
I find it easier to blip the throttle betwen 1-2. Before you bomve into second, while still on the clutch, give it a little throttle so that the engine is spinning faster once it gets into second. It will grab less that way.

gotcha bro...

get some practice in a car with a lightweight flywheel; then you will never have any issues shifting ever again
