Looking for advice - buying a car in Mass and bringing to NYC

Hey guys, I'd thought I'd ask to see if anyone knows how this works. My friend is looking to buy a 2010 GT and bringing it back to NYC. He is planning on registering it to NY plates, since he lives here. Now, according to him, it's going to take two trips - one trip up there to buy, and then another trip to actually bring it back. The reason he says is, insurance requires proof of registration, and while NYS allows temporary registration, MA doesn't recognize the NYS temp registration and won't let him drive the car. Registering it in MA requires an MA address, and he doesn't have that.

In fact, he tried calling the NYS DMV, and they referred him to the MA DMV, who proceeded to tell him that without a MA address, they won't speak to him.

Can anyone advise on what's the best way of doing this? Will it definitely require 2 trips?

*edit* and the reason he is purchasing in MA is because he found the exact car he wants there

Is this car at a mazda dealership?

Yes, place is called Wellsley Mazda

I would have your friend go to a local mazda dealership in ny and tell them the car he wants is in MA. The dealership in NY would have the car shipped down from MA. Of course your friend would have to buy the car from the dealership in NY. Does this make sense to you?

Yes, thanks. Let me see what he says, and what the dealers say.

Yeah, check into what Invasion said. My car came from another state, but I bought it from a MA dealership, it was new though so all they did was trade it for the one they had on the floor (They had red, I wanted blue). But, that seems like his best bet =)

MA has some stupid laws

The last time I bought an Rx8 out of state from a dealer, they provided a 30 day temp tag and I had my insurance. It was very simple. Once I got back to NY, I registered the car.

Either way will work without much hassle.

A dealer in NY can transfer it for you (they buy it at wholesale from the MA dealer).

-or-

Buy it in MA, get your insurance coverage, and you'll get a grace period (10 days?) to drive it back and register it. Make sure they know you're registering it elsewhere so you don't pay MA sales tax (you'll of course have to pay NY tax when you register).

btw: it's spelled Wellesley (my home town). ;)

My friend decided to give up on it lol.. I think the insurance he is going through is giving him a tough time as well on the temp thing.
