Inviting Kane up to teach us about engine tuning
Alright - this is for the NY and NJ guys (or more, if people of other states wanna drive in).
Who would be interested in having Kane come up to do a 1-2 day lesson on tuning the 8? His lesson plan includes: Activities: Read and Diagnose problems in Engine Logs and Dyno's Project Vehicles Intro to Engine Physics (Gas Laws) How Air Impacts Engine VE, CAI, Ram Air Engine Cycle Explosions - aka Brisance EFI Tuning / Carb Tuning MAP vs MAF vs Combo Tuning Common Mods (Facts and Myths) Static vs Dynamic Compression Torque vs Horsepower Intake / Exhaust Info Cam Info (including Reversion) *If anyone has Cams* Porting and Polishing Info Turbo Info Supercharger Info NO2 Fuel Injector Math FI Special Considerations How to read, design, and source compressors Packaging Constraints Build vs Buy Tuning Considerations For FI on an NA Motor For FI on an FI Motor Variable Valve Timing *** If anyone has it *** Ignition Systems / Cooling and Fueling Planning for a Tuning Session Knowing your EMS MAP / MAF Styles (all in the Load) Piggyback Stand Alone PCM Flash Step by Step Tuning Guide Sensors Base Map Engine VE Model Plan for Scaling Cruising Tuning Map Engine Airflow Plan for Fueling Map Engine Fueling Variations in Target AFR WOT Tuning Idle Tuning (last and the least fun) Tuning Timing EGT Dyno By “Feel” - Least Accurate Tuning the “Extras” Cooling AT Redline Ignition Documenting the Tuning Process Planning and Conducting a Dyno Tuning Session Baseline Dyno Analyze and Document Results Retune Tune for Power Redo Street Tune When are you “Done” - if ever Plan for new modifications before you install them. Kane doesn't require too much in travel and stay - a plane trip would be best for him ($150 round trip) vs the drive because he's snowed in down there. He's available from now till the 20th of February. He can stay in a hotel, or he can stay with one of us if we're willing. He charges a flat $500 for the class, which would cover up to two days of classes. So if we have more people, chipping in, it'll benefit us more. The airfare is an estimate for now. Plane ticket from Newport News, VA or I could drive... but I am thinking that isn't worth it....flights are pretty cheap these days. I have done a few of these, they take a very full day or two chill days.... Hotel or crash at someone's house... I am easy either way. And for RX8 folks I'd do it for a flat $500 plus expenses. So if you want to do one day or two it doesn't matter to me.... If you wanted to be cheap you could fly me in (about $150 I guess), I'll crash at someone's house and run the class over a day or two - so the whole thing would be about 650 in that case. I'll tune at least one car start to finish and walk everyone else through the AP or Hymee etc - flash tuners in general. If you have folks with others like the emanagae Int-X or AEM etc, Mazdaspeed 3-6, STI whatever it's cool I cover those too. We'd just need a place where we can hang together and have him explain everything to us. Access to the volunteer cars will be best (i.e. someone's place) so we can see how the tuning directly affects the outputs. Cool man let me know... the one upside of a hotel I guess is guests can use the conference room usually for free I think....though the actual tuning process could easily take place at someone's crib or a dyno etc since you are the ones driving them around to get logs... HEHE I could do an APexi PFC on a 7 pretty easy, if there are no FI 8's I can just walk everyone through the difference from say mine or J Cab's tune and your NA ones. If we attend as a group, the chances of us all understanding how it works will increase. After all, if one of us doesn't get it, someone else might. Then we can help each other out. If you do not feel comfortable tuning your car, don't feel obligated to jump at this opportunity. I cannot compare Kane to MM. They are different people - but Kane has shown that he is very capable. If you just want to buy a tune from someone, get it from MM. You might still buy the tunes from MM after this class. I'm trying to set this up so I can understand how to tune the rotary. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you guys are interested, post here and I will pm each of you. Please consider this seriously. The more of us that learn about this, the better off we are as a community! P.S. Kane, if you wish to add anything to this, feel free or PM me. Thanks! |

No travel required, the dates are flexible and I use an open feedback environment that allows it to be more like a classroom than just some WEB page. Having someone there to explain the process is pretty awesome, for sure. But it isn't the only way to do it and the online seminar is a bit more formal and gives everyone access to the software in real time. Seminar Page I'll update the dates if anyone is interested. The seminar covers the workings of all engine management to some extent, not just the AccessPORT-specific stuff. It has also gone on to 4 parts and the sessions run over (at no additional cost) just to make sure everyone gets what they want from the process. |
If anyone shows up with a GTO complete with HP Tuners, radical cam, and heads and wants me to get it to idle nice; you're getting popped in the jaw... :D:

You may also want to consider that I already offer a 3-part, online seminar on this for only $175.

That is an option as well; especially if the number of people is low.
In person has its advantages, though I've found that face-to-face sessions usually degenerate into beer pong pretty quickly. |
I can't imagine why a big group of rotards getting together would degenerate into beer pong. Btw, I can bring a few six packs if we want :ylsuper:
I'm going to assume that we'll have a pretty large group - especially if the NJ guys would like to get in on this. If so, I would consider your (MM) service to be more of the graduating lesson. Something we can (separately as desired) pursue after getting the whole she-bang from Kane. This way, we have a good hands-on background to depend on - it would make an online experience a lot easier on us. I would love to know when your online seminars are separately from this thread - although I'm guessing whenever you update them you'll have a thread for that. |
LOLZ - yeah it happens from time to time; as the NW folks can attest to.
|
Should we raffle off a free tune to include flashing - even if they don't have a flasher.... cause I have extras!
|
I would definitely be willing to chip in for a in person class. I can work my way around an Apexi PFC but would love to understand the ins and outs to the INTX and Cobb.
I will say this though, tuning is one of more experienced areas a car enthusiast learns. You really need to understand how everything works and reacts in different conditions through diagnosing, modifying, rebuilding, etc. Just throwing out an idea. It might be too much but if this goes through it would be nice to have Kane tune someones car on a dyno as part of the class. |
lol, if you want to we could, Kane.
@RX927 - Sinned suggested Dave @ KDR (in Pennsylvania), but I was unsure if people would want to travel out to PA. Although right now, it seems like we don't have too many people interested :( |
In a perfect world tuning a car on the dyno would be an awesome final day for the course. It would just depend on what you guys want to do - I am easy either way.
|
I'm Interested count me in if we can get a few more to make it reasonable.
|
I'm guessing we'll need 8-10 people to make the cost reasonable, so for now it appears we have 3
|
really interested, let me sort out my finances, but i think this is definitely worth the money.
also dependent if i can crash at anyone's place. send me a PM if i can. i dont need more than couch. hell, i could actually work with less. haha. |
Alrighty - we got 4!
I would definitely offer my place to you guys, except I live at home and I do not think my parents would approve =\ |
when would this be?
|
When I am told! LOL
But it needs to be before March; cause I leave for a year at that time. |
Kane what picture is in your avatar? i cant figure out the picture
|
It is a turbo on a land cruiser that we built in the desert.....out of spare parts. And a dive helmet and some camel toe.... HEHE

This would probably be next week, 13th/14th would looks best.
Airfare looks closer to $200 (based on Jet Blue). |
Funny; I just flew my Father-In-Law from here to Las Vegas for $190....how is this ticket gonna cost more WTF?!?!
|
aaannddd count me out. my 2nd (replacement trans) just starting grinding. im probably selling my accessport. i have 0 plans to go turbo now.
|
It's 99 each way lol (well, 98, 97, close enough). Might be lower if I dig for deals.
Damn Kersh, I saw your other thread.. good luck dude =\ |
I was setting up a Dyno day at Enzo's shop in Bayshore.... I wonder if he'll let us do this at the same time???? He's a tuner himself and I don't know how he would feel someone else in his house ya know. But we would have a shop and a brand new Dyno......
|
Dunno! But Kane doesn't need to stay at his place, lol - we can set Kane up at a local hotel.
Where is Bayshore btw? |
