Engine Compression test, interested?
 

Still in 100k core warranty but don't wanna pay 100s of dollars just to get it test?

Here is your chance~ I'm think to do a group compression test, time will be around first weekend or maybe 2nd weekend of November. (or weekday, depends on what people wants really)Here is what's going to happen

Location: somewhere near queens, prefer flushing ,meadows park, the place where they held US Open every year,. It's a big lot but gets busy over weekends. We can work the time/location out really.

-at least 5 Cars to test, otherwise the price either gonna go up by a bit, or not even worth the time.(meaning cancel)
- meet somewhere, maybe close to my home or an open parking lot in queens. Depends on how many person joins
- I will bring all the equipment I need to do the test, test will be perform with official Mazda compression tester, not some knock offs nor piston tester bs, when the test is done, the system will generate a log file and you can print/look at it later.
- takes around 1/2 hr each car. Keep that in mind
- optional stock ecu update : pm for details

Cost of compression test will be around 70 per car(assume 5 guy signed up),this is probably 1/2 the cost or less than some dealership charges, might go lower if there are more participant.


I tried to do this last year, didn't happen at the end because lots of people pm me(or no reply at all) at the last minute to cancel. So depends on what happens, I might have to ask for a deposit from PayPal first, when we meet at the point of testing, you will pay me in cash. And I will issue a refund on PayPal right away via my phone, sounds fair to everyone? If u pay and don't show up, that's your problem.

P.s: mod, im not selling anything, just trying to help the community, cost of Mazda compression tester and dealer tool to check ecu ain't free, posting the cost will let people know what to expect. If that's not ok this year(it was fine last) I can remove the cost and reply by pm. Thanks

Say, if your engine's still under warranty, and the test indicates compression is poor, will Mazda accept those results and give you a new engine? Or will the dealer make you pay to have them perform their own compression test to verify?

They will do their own test to confirm. You will only have to pay for a dealer compression test if the engine passes, or if it fails and the warranty has expired.

Not sure why you would bother, I hear you don't believe the engine failures out there :)

Compression test not done at a dealer, not by a trained Mazda technician, with different equipment, and word of mouth given to a dealer by someone off the street? Ya I'm sure they'd replace your engine without checking themselves... Lol.

Oh I believe they occur. Just not nearly as frequently as they appear to occur by extrapolating frequency on this forum to the RX-8 population at large. Anyway, my engine warranty's up in February, so there's no reason for me not to check.

They wont, but doing a test before will give you an idea what to expect.

If you failed the test by a lot, thats also good, say, at 5.x, or lower, cuz even if u go in to dealer, u dont have to pay anything, when test fails mazda pays for the test, and unless something magical happen, your compression will not go above the border line, which is 6.8

Here is what gets tricky, what if your numbers are right around the pass/fail mark? I tested at least couple dozens of rx7/8, some of them got better compression after a zoom zoom/water treatment, one went 1.1 higher after the test, but most were within the range of 0.1-0.4

But what if a cleaning didnt chamge anything? Then u gotta decide what u wanna do. And the compression test itself have a margin of error around 0.1~ kPa. So one time u get 6.8/6.8/6.8, while the next try might get you 6.9/6.9/6.9. I seen that before and most people just drive it till its dead,

They will check it for sure, cuz they have to submit the numbers into their mx connect sheet to get a replacement. But a test out there will give u a better idea, at least u dont have to sit for hours at a dealership for something that can be done in around 1/2 hr

Factory trained tech doesnt mean much to me, ive been to 5dealership and only 1 that actually have someone who knows what he is talking about. While the others, argh, at one of those bs. Dealer, i said my rear view mirror rattles like a bitch, the service writier came back 3 hrs later then said "oh, the tech said the rattle came from ur aftermarket spoiler..." seriously? When it rattles, hold the mirror, the rattle stops and u gonna tell me this sound im hearing inside the cabin with my windows closed came from my genuine mazdaspeed wing ... so much for "mazda trained tech"

Oh yes, i got that more than a year ago, and to make life easier, im ordering my 2nd set of sensor soon, so one crank will give me both rotor's result

I have no doubt your work is better than any technician at Mazda. When someone has a passion for a hobby, it shows and the care and attention to detail is there. You know your stuff.

My point simply was you can't walk in to a dealership saying "My engine failed my compression test. Replace it" lol

I know, only problem i see is some mazda trained tech ... really has no idea what they are talking about, its funny when they cant(dont know how) even use that god damn tester properly ... like test the car after its been sitting for 3 hrs, oh hey, you pass ur compression test! Yay?

Yup. I went through the exact same thing when I had mine head south. Went one place, didn't get anywhere there even after doing the legwork for them. They said Mazda told them the engine was fine. I called MNAO, and they said the dealer never raised a case haha. So, tried another dealer and found a good one I guess.

pearl i have a 12a rotor and housing in my garage that im gonna clean up for a display item if you want to borrow it for a test lol. i took out all the broken seals tho

If he does come out here, I'll do my best to come by with the MSM. Just don't schedule in on the last weekend of October or the first weekend of November. My tuner is requesting me to come show my MSM at his open house and a track weekend at Summit Point respectively.
