Daily Driver Titling & Registration
Hello All,
I am thinking about purchasing a used car as a DD and I am a little confused about the titling and registration process. From what I understand, if I purchase a vehicle from a private seller, who has a clean title to said car, and it is currently inspected, all I have to do is go to a notary or title place and have the title transferred to me. Is this correct? I would of course need a new license plate and such, but the car does not need to be reinspected right? As long as I purchase a car within the same state (PA). Any help would be appreciated to understand that process. Thanks. |

I just transfered 3 cars from RI to PA moving here, and from everything I've found, I would think that your statement is correct.
I did find one point that explicitly states that it is not necessary to have the annual inspection coincide with the annual registration renewal, and has the method for syncing them up if necessary. (Frequently Asked Questions: Vehicle Safety Inspections - Motorist) When should my vehicle's safety inspection sticker expire? Top Upon passing a safety inspection most passenger cars and light trucks will receive an inspection sticker valid for one year from the month of inspection or one year from the expiration of the current inspection sticker on the vehicle. Since 2005, Pennsylvania no longer requires that the inspection sticker expiration and vehicle registration expiration coincide for annually inspected vehicles. Vehicle owners can request that their inspection and registration expirations match, but this may result in a shortened inspection cycle initially. The chart for annually inspected vehicles below can be used to determine whether requesting a coordination of inspection and registration expirations will result in a short inspection cycle. It made me curious about how they could be different, and the only point I could find that would separate them is if it already had an existing valid inspection at the time of registration. Otherwise, inspection and registration happen together (or close enough), and they will always be synced at that point. PA's site is quite difficult to deal with, and this isn't the only point that I've found that they only imply, but not actually state. They also don't actually state any penalties or regulations around what happens if you fail inspection. |
Thank you RIWWP. I was pretty sure that my statement was correct, but based on what I was reading on PENDOT's site, I couldnt get a totally clear answer. Your definitely correct in saying that alot of the info on the site is hard to decipher. Thanks for replying.
