Anyone else have this happen?

Anyone else have this happen often? I just got my 8 and i get to work and i told my friends and co-workers what i just purchased...And almost no one knew what the hell i was talking about...i then have to explain the motor and the purpose of it and people are even more lost...So i showed them the car and thier responses were all the same "Its cute"....WTF :Freak_ani

Has this happened to anyone else is the RX-8 really that well hidden from society...I did some searches and found that most people and even site members have never seen a specific RX-8 commercial only clips of it in the background of other Mazda commercials.... :Eyecrazy:

So I'm interested in what people have to say...let me know

RotaryRider36 05-01-2006 10:53 PM

Ive met alot of people that have never heard of an rx8. However, ive never recieved the cute remark. Its always more like..."damn, that a hot car" or..."wtf, how much money do you really make?" The car is pure sex my friend.

Skythe 05-01-2006 11:05 PM

I've gotten, cute, pretty, sexy, hot, and other similar comments

I have never seen an RX8 commercial. I only knew of it becuase I was a magazine junky.

Not many people actually know what it is, that it has 4 doors and that it doesn't have pistons.

I went to class on day and this guy asks me, "have you ever thought about modding it" and I'm thinkin, (geez, how do I convey to this guy that I know way more than him without sounding like a douche). So I let him talk and the next question he asks me is...well..it wasn't really a question. He proceeds to tell me, "you can get a lot of power out of porting the head and a lighter crankshaft, and lightened pulleys" Obviously these bloke had no idea what he was talking about. I was so stuck. I didn't know what to tell him. Then he started telling me how cheap mods are. All in all this was really a bad situation and I had no idea about how to recover.

I would agree that the RX8 has been under-publicized but it's kinda been a good thing. I know that if they put more work into spreading the word there would be more of them on the road, and I like being one of the few unlike the masses of 350Z/G35 and mustang owners.

I agree with that statement

You need one of those operating rotor model keychains. It won't help the most stupid ones, but you need one anyway. ;)

Yeah - the masses are ignorant. People are always floored to see the rear doors swing open. People cran their necks and stare.

I'll tell you what else you need to prepare for from your co-workers - they'll watch your car. Any slight scratch - everyone will ask you about it. Drive a loaner car because of warrenty work and everyone will ask about it. Anytime they spot your RX-8 or another RX-8 around town they'll tell you about it. Then, they'll have the nerve to act like you're the weird one.

I got one, those help BIG time when faced with the "what the heck is a rotary?" question. Of course, before I explain it to someone I ask "you know how piston engines work right?". If they say no, I say nevermind, you wouldn't care anyway ;)

Also, I think the popularity of the car has a bit to do with location, (this is the NE forum afterall hehe). I'm in Boston and its *somewhat* common near the city, but other than that its pretty rare in New england, probably due to its percieved shortcomings in the winter. I think they are a bit better known in the warmer climes.

That being said, I have similar experiances as the topic starter, and I think its great. The unique aspect was a big selling point for me. Also, the most common comment I get is "cute" (which i don't understand), followed closely by "hot" or "sexy". Also common is just the standard "wow nice car"

Along the same lines, almost everyone that's gotten in it that doesn't know about the car in the first place asks me if my seats (red black two tone) are aftermarket. I just smile and say "nope, pretty cool huh?" :)

Yesterday someone told me to put a supercharger on it instead of a turbo... :dunno:

chritcos 05-02-2006 05:24 PM

I took a few people for a ride and everyone had pretty much the same responce "holy sh*t" and i laugh as i take them on turns way faster than there car can handle.. and i tell them "see i dont need brakes to turn." there all like "really why doesnt your car need brakes?" I tell them never mind i have brakes...

This car though i have only had it for a week has gotten me more attention than anything i've ever owned and i like it

BTW how would i go about getting that key chain?

chritcos 05-02-2006 08:33 PM

I was talking to my girlfriends boss today and we were talking about gas prices....i told him it costs me about $45 to fill my tank...he goes "well thats because you have a V8" i said "no i have a rotary" he goes "oh you have a V6" i said "no its a rotary no cylinders" he looks at me puzzled and goes "oh its a 4 cylinder" again i said "no its a rotary no cylinders no pistons none of that" so he goes "its a 5 cylinder?" i just looked at him and said forget it

Skythe 05-02-2006 09:12 PM

Yea...yea..exactly

I've had that happen to me too.

As humans we're often victim of thinking too inside the box, or what you can call paradigm thinking. If it don't soung like something in the box,.....then it must be something in the box. It's amusing to me when you can look into someone's eyes and tell they can't process certain input. You can almost see their brain reject the information.

How many cylinders does this have?
none.
So it's a V6?
no, it doesn't have any...it's a v0
So it's a 4 cylinder?

Yeah, the car really hugs the road, doesn't it. Not at all like the tall sedans and trucks everyone else around here drives.

These guys have the slowest website, but they have the best stuff and the best prices. My keychain has held up well and it was only $5.99. Try these links:

You're welcome. It's not the most straight-forward website, but it's a great price for the keychain. Enjoy!

When I was getting my loan drawn up for the car, the loan officer asked me how many cylinders is it because she needed the info for the loan forms. They only had items to bubble in on the form. I ended up having to let her bubble in 4 cyl. because there was no choice for rotary or other. She definitely was puzzled when I told her it had no pistons. The look was priceless.

A lot of people are shocked by how this car drives. They get word that it's under powered and whatnot, but when they ride with me, they REALLY get some second thoughts, mostly like "yeah it's a little under powered ... but sure's hell not by much. and what kind of suspension mods did you make to this thing? Stock? DAMN!!!"

I find now that i have the car every civic in northern new jersey is after me its truly annoying because if im just driving with my girl or trying to just relax and cruise they show up.... This happen to you guys too

Usually i just look at them and laugh im not really into racing anymore gas is too expesive to waste it :)

The other day when I had to get my emissions inspection and the guy was entering my info, there was an option for rotary but when he selected it if kicked it back with invalid entry. huh??

He ended up having to put 4 cyl I thought it was strange to have rotary as an option and then not let you use it. This was in Texas by the way. Sorry it doesn't apply to the NE region.
