rent or borrow a pilot bearing removal / install tool ,flywheel wrench. chicago
 

HI, I am looking to borrow or rent a pilot bearing removal tool, pilot bearing installation tool and a fly wheel socket or wrench. i am will to put a deposit for full tool replacement, in case anything breaks. i am located in the elmhurst area. i am looking for anyone in the chicagoland and milwaukee area. i can come pick up the tools from you

I think I've still got a 3/4" socket the right size for the nut but nothing to drive it with anymore. I also had the mazdatrix tool to lock the flywheel so you can turn the nut.

I'll check when I get home. You can borrow them if you come pick them up in the Avondale neighborhood (near Kimball and I-90/94).

That would be great! The socket is a 54mm. I can pick it up when ever you are available. I am still waiting on some parts coming in

Does PepBoys rent out tools? Your local tool rental may have it as well.

They do. But from what I have been reading, the Mazda Oem puller works the best. A lot of people have used the harbor freight one with good results too.

Have you ever heard of the bread trick? I've used it once before and it worked. You cram small pieces of bread into the pilot bearing hole and keep hammering it in with a punch. After about 1/4 of the loaf, the bread will start pushing the bearing out. You just need a punch that is close to the diameter of the pilot bearing hole.

lol serious. You can use grease too instead of bread. Old school tricks.

I rented a puller and removed the bearing succesfully. I have not heard of the bread trick. And I am not sure I would try it. I believe in using the right tool for the job. Plus, I would rather go to the auto store than the grocery store any day

I'm all for using the right tool for the job too but I've seen some very small pilot bearings and traditional pullers won't get in there without trimming the tool to fit. Also, if I can save a trip to either store and just continue the job, I'd be happy. Check it out, just for future reference.
