Saturdays: Weekly meets/drives in Chicagoland for RWD/AWD owners/fans :)

Figured we'd make one thread and just keep updating it instead of making new ones every week :)

Here's this week's info:
This Saturday 4/28/07
- Meet up time and shop tour: 3:00pm-5:30pm ...
- Cruise time: 6:00pm at the earliest - details to follow at the meet

Auto Werks (Northbrook)
1827 Janke Drive, Northbrook, IL 60062 (Corner of Janke & Carlson)
We will be parked off of Carlson, behind the shop, pretty much the center of the photo below.

DO NOT DRIVE LIKE AN @SSHAT WHILE YOU LOOK FOR US. Be careful if you enter from sidestreets, this means you if you're lowered or have less than 50 series sidewalls on your tires.

Here are the rules for our meets:

Here are the rules for our drives:

If you don't have one already, bring an FRS (e.g. Motorola Talkabout) radio that can do privacy/security channels. You'll have a much better time during the cruise.

Whatever brand you get, make sure it's got the CTCSS/Privacy/Security codes so you can talk with us.... so far the three interoperable brands appear to be Cobra, Midland, and Motorola. (Their privacy/CTCSS codes match).

Cheaper FRS radios only have channels 1-14. FRS radios with the CTCSS/Privacy/Security sub-channels have channels 1-14 with subchannels 1-38 in each main channel, ala 1^1-1^38 - 14^1-14^38.

You can still listen into conversations on equipment that doesn't support subchannels, but you can't speak/broadcast.

For those of you that don't know what Autowerks is like... here's a sneak peek... it's the closest thing we've got to an LA-style shop here in Chicago...

The route actually branches directly off of the Compton ring so there is no extra in route time. Once on the route, we go no more than 5 miles between twisties. There's a variety of fun on just-paved glassy roads including elevation changes, tight, complicated switchbacks and high speed curves (55mph zones!!). This is definitely worth the drive, some of the best driving roads I've ever seen. Some of the roads I would put in my top 5, even over my old trails in California!

Here's a video of one of the areas we'll be driving through this weekend... it's a short run, but hey, we're in IL--we're flatlanders! LOL!

(Let's just hope the weather holds!)

Here's the video of one the spots we drove on...

I gotta try to make it out to one of these sometime. Looks like you guys have found some roads with more than one or two curves in them - something hard to do in this area :)

PhlypSide 08-20-2007 04:26 PM

mdw1000:

You're more than welcome to join us :) We've got a few other RX-8 heads about as well, but I believe you'd be our first Silver one!

Collectively we have done alot of homework! This weekend's proposed tour is one of my personal favorites. We have a 12 mile route (with an option to go longer) that includes lots of curves and oddly enough... HILLS.

Some pics from this past Saturday:

Some more...

PhlypSide 08-31-2007 11:17 PM

BTW, Here is the video of "t3h ring" we drove on.... NOTE: Video is far shorter than the actual 12 mile run :)

Wow, NSXs...

PhlypSide 09-01-2007 10:30 AM

Yep, we seek out everything from $600 AW11 MR-2s to $200K+ Lamborghinis, the common theme is all the cars are NOTFWD.

Glad ya liked the pics :) We're headed out again today.... here are the details....

We've got a brand new meet and cruise in West Chicago. [/size]
This is probably our twistiest course to date. Plenty of Very tight turns with elevation changes.

The setup is a 17 mile ring. Just like 'teh ring' only a little larger. Unlike the ring, it has 77 curves

If you don't have one already, bring an FRS (e.g. Motorola Talkabout) radio that can do privacy/security channels. You'll have a much better time during the cruise.

http://www.gmrsweb.com/codetable.html <- CTCSS/Privacy/Security code translation table
