Rotary Issues

1 Attachment(s)
I bought my RX8 back in June of 2011, so I haven't even had it for a year. When I purchased it, they had just swapped the rotary in it. I have put 8k on it since then and I am having a few issues. First off, the dip stick is full of sludge. I keep up on the oil changes every 3k or less, but the sludge is very alarming. Also, since I purchased it there has been a high pitched screeching noise that happens when I start it when it is cold. Has anyone had that problem before, and if so what is causing that? I will post a pic of the dip stick. It is very discouraging. I know the rotary has an 8 yr 100k warranty on it, but mine is a 2004. I am wondering when the cut off is for the 8 years? I only have 76k on the car total. I will be calling the local Mazda dealer in the A.M. Any input on my issues would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Zac

The pic suggests that you drive mostly short trips. That would account for what you see. As for the noise, could it be a belt that slips when its cold? My 2cents anyway.

You are correct, I do a lot of short trips. I read on here a while ago to make sure you are hitting 6k rpms every other day to help break up carbon. I make sure and do that in 2nd gear at least once a day. I also let the car run before I drive it. I was told not to drive when it is cold. The sound isn't a belt, it is in the front of the car on the passenger side. It almost sounds like a jet engine winding up when it starts. I will try and get a video of it so you can hear the sound.

The milky substance on the dip stick is moisture in the oil. Like they said, you not getting it warmed up enough for long enough to get rid of the moisture.
The noise you are hearing is likely the emissions air pump. It only runs on start up. It supplies fresh air to the catalytic converter to make it more efficient when it hasn't had a chance to get hot yet.

Al hit this one on the nose, I think.

OP, read up on "Milky dipstick" and "cold start noise/squeal/etc"

Is that noise for the air pump normal or should it be replaced? I will post a video the next time I start it up.
