If you live in Ft Wayne, forget the NAV

I went to visit my cousins over at Ft. Wayne IN, and was trying to use my nav system there (second time going there with the nav). Apparently in that general area, the Nav system doesnt work so well, and is way off at times, so if you live in that area and want to get an RX8, dont get one with a NAV, or you will have to hope when the updated DIsc comes out, that the glitches will be fixed. (Nav works fine in columbus ohio).
I got lost a couple times using that dang nav, because the directions to my address would cut off mid way through... leaving me stranded. I had to drive around to figure out where I was. Also the map would be off (the map showed my car was going off the highway).

Just FYI.

Alot of that has to deal with area. Mountains can throw it off. The GPS satilites might not be able to triangulate in that area very well due to there placement. Plus updated disks might not be availible. If I was you I would right down where it messed up so that it can get fixed.

There are no mountains in IN.:D

The GPS "constellations" aren't geostationary... they move across the sky, meaning that there are no places on the Earth that get consistenly poor GPS reception. Even in mountanous regions, there should be periods of time when the GPS signal is strong. Also, the NAV system uses gyroscopes when the GPS signal is weak or absent, and it stays accurate for a surprising long time. (The "GPS" icon on the screen disappears when the signal is weak -- in my car, it blinks on and off when I'm parked in the garage.) My guess is that the maps produced by NavTech may be out of date in the Fort Wayne area.

Thanks for tellin me that Alphapenguin! I was gonna pick up my 8 this saturday and I was torn over whether or not to get a nav system. You saved me 2000 bucks!

For what it's worth, my Nav system worked fine in both Fort Wayne and New Haven when I visited relatives... so I'm guessing it was an isolated problem with that guys system.

I think I understand what happened to our friend in Fort Wayne. I was driving in Springfield, IL, today and asked the NAV to direct me back to my hotel. I received a message that said, in bold letters, "DETAILED DIRECTIONS NOT PROVIDED. PLEASE OBEY ALL LOCAL TRAFFIC LAWS. PRESS ENTER TO CONTINUE." I then got a map with my location plotted, and a blue outline of how to get to the hotel, but I was not on the blue line, as I would normally expect.

My theory: I was driving on a road that was once a one-way street, going the other direction. The NAV recognized that I was driving illegally or that its information was bad, and kicked out the above message. I had been navigating around Springfield without problems earlier in the day, which is consistent with my theory. The NAV also took my second request for detailed directions, once I got on a major road.

By the way, I had my first NAV "failure" yesterday. While driving in an urban area, I got lost, asked for it to get me home, and it directed me to a very bad part of town late at night where I eventually came up against a sign "Bridge Closed" on a road that the NAV had listed as "Unknown Road." That was bad. The good news is that there was a highway access and I jumped back on without a problem. I know in Chicago that there are a few places with highway exits but not entrance ramps. In a bad location at the wrong time of day in a car like the RX-8 -- I get nervous.

I keep telling everyone to burn their NAV.. no one believes me..

What part of Ft wayne were you in? Garrett? Auburn? Is Pierre's still there?

gonnahanvan8 11-08-2005 10:07 PM

Yeah, Pierre's is still here. The problem with the Nav in town is our streets suk. Most of them have two names. (well, a lot of them anyway.)
