First drive in the snow...

Wow, I've driven a lot of rwd sports cars in the snow, but this car is by far the worst of them all in the snow! Talk about a challanging drive....and only in 1" of snow! :uhh: <<<<---My face when I tried to stop from 7mph and the abs kicked in. <<<<---My expression when I almost got stuck in a parking lot in 1" of snow. :banghead: <<<<---Myself now because I didn't buy winter tires yet.

Looking up pricing right now. lol

Yea, I think most of us learn the hard way about winter tires. I have the Dunlop M3 sports. They are amazing, but the ice tonight makes most tires virtually worthless.

nmarz77, sending you a PM about joining the Chicago group! Information on all meets is in the Chicago sticky thread in the MW forum :D:

Cool, thanks for the info and the invite! :)

I waited too long to install mine this year and got to take a drive on summer tires in a bit of snow and ice. You just don't have any traction. The winters make the car stick very well to the point that I can truly frighten my co-workers when I give them a ride in the snow...

RedSheDevil 12-01-2007 04:32 PM

^^ Yea, you Canadians know all too well about winter tires and the need for 'em :wink2:

DarkBrew 12-01-2007 04:49 PM

^^ I'm sure that you're sweating out another warm fall day :)

RedSheDevil 12-01-2007 04:50 PM

Hah! We're in the middle of an ice storm right now :( So bad I had to cancel our meet :crying:

chetrickerman 12-01-2007 05:12 PM

yea, it started out to be snow, and now its ice, really cool. i hate you winter!!

dyakonfrost 12-03-2007 02:16 PM

Yes that's true driving this car during the winter is hard. And if u don't have a winter tires it's is almost impossible. My experience whit first snow.

dothackRAVE 12-04-2007 09:43 PM

Snow will be falling soon here. Not yet, but soon, but on really cold and wet days, Rena does traffic stop burnouts all the time with the Ventus RS2s. :D

I've swapped em out for Blizzaks though. Hate the lack of connection the tires make me feel, but it's either that or crash.

I was out when the snow hit the St.Louis area, and there was a black Rx8 that appeared to have just been extracted from the center median snag wire area on interstate 70. Looked like the 8 faired pretty well and maybe did not get tangled in the wire. wondered if the owner had snows on or not.

My experience in driving my Rx8 in snow with pirelli wintersports is that the winter tires provide much better traction and more importantly the adhesion limits and behavior of the car is more predictable.
Even so though, it can still be a bit spooky feeling and overall I don't consider it a great winter driver snow tires or not. Just my perspective of course, but just don't expect winter tires to transform the 8 into something its not. Without snows though, you are definetly courting disaster.

With winter tires my car didn't do all that great the first snow fall, but there was ice on the ground so i'm not going to blame the car.

Over all though as far as i can remember with winters tires and some weight in the trunk i've done fine the past two years.

Haven't relaly driven the car in the snow or ice this winter that much i just take the x5

I learned my first year that the stock tires really suck in the snow. Almost stuck in a parking lot with <1" of snow. I now run Dunlop Wintersport M3s and they do pretty well. Just throw some common sense in with a good winter tire and you should do fine.

This is our first year of mounting snow tires for the RX. My wife works for Ford and one of the VP's had an RX for a company lease car. When he turned it in, he posted up a set of 4 Pirelli snow tires which were used about 6K miles. It was the best $200 I've ever spent!!!

I love my RX again in the winter.

No probs with my Dunlop Sport 3d's...

Solidtrance 01-04-2008 08:34 PM

Just drove to Chicago (from Norfolk, VA) on the 2nd, and the 8 did really well. Came through South Bend at about 2230 and it was snowing really hard (lots of snow on the surface of the road, and windy 15-20mph at least). I had to slow down to 40-50mph, but things seemed pretty stable at that speed. Probably could have pushed a little harder but why? I have Blizziak's on the car and they seem to do well. Just slow down and use some common sense and the car responds predictably. The T/C has a different feel on a RWD car. I would suggest finding an empty snowy parking lot to get use to it if you are new to RWD. Just don't get it stuck and you should be fine.

yes. i have them too and wow wat a difference.. i had the stocks on last year and they sucked. this year i havent gotten stuck once yet... BILZZAKKS are the way to go

kellybrf 01-05-2008 03:58 PM

i didnt have them the first winter and definitely got stuck, the car is pretty much impossible to drive with the stock potenzas. switched to the blizzack lm22s the next year and ive been out in 12+ inches of snow and the car does just fine. obviously you have to drive accordingly, but ive found the 8 to be nearly as good as the wrx i drove for a year prior to getting the 8. youre sol on ice either way though

GameGuy369 01-22-2008 08:38 PM

yeah I about died the first time driving my baby in snow. I figured, surely this side street must be just really bad. Nah. Get on the main roads, sure enough, my RX-8 was nearly about to start speaking to me to tell me to get off the frickin road, haha.

Next year, I am getting myself some Blizzaks. I'm just making it by this year by using my little sisters Accord on icy days when she doesnt work.
