Best roads in Chicago area, IL, WI, MI
What are your choices for the best roads to take a drive within 100 miles of Chicago? Could be scenic, twisty, wooded, waterfront, or anything interesting.

Lake Shore Drive! Right in the lake front, a little curves not that much. BUt it has lights, not really a highway. But very nice scenary.

I live in Walwort County Wisconsin there are a few nice roads aroung here and in the South Kettle Moraine state forest, PM me and I can give you some directions.
Some of the best Wisconsin roads are South East of Madison though. |
check the wisconsin/Illinois sticky at the top of the page. The cruise was yesterday and was alot of fun despite the bad weather. The route included alot of twisty backroads through wisconsin which were devoid of any law enforcement. Also the route will take you through some quaint little towns with classic rural downtown areas.

The WI club organized a drive last fall that sounded quite cool. A couple of Chicago guys were going to attend, including me, but my schedule didn't work out.
Here is a link to their Events page, which mentions the drive/event, but it doesn't give enough info on the exact route. Contact them for more info on the route. http://www.rxclubofwi.org/calendar.htm We should do another one this year, and get more Midwest people out. Cheers, Steve |
Watch out on Lake Shore at about 900 lake shore drive you will meet "The S Turn" i think posted speed limit is 20. Drive that speed, i drove it in my prelude @ 35mph one night and ended up totaling it into the middle median wall. Thats why i now have my 8.
|
oh i forgot to mention that after the S turn heading north on Lake Shore is fun as hell to drive in the 8. The only thing u have to watch out for it the shitty bumps on the road. They really hit the car hard!!
|
I would second the caution on that S-turn on Lakeshore. The non-rotary drivers slow down to about 2 MPH, and I came up on that turn at about 60 figuring a little light braking and I was through it. I nearly rear-ended the cars almost at a standstill waiting to creep through the turn at 2 MPH.
But Lakeshore is a very scenic stretch of road. It is especially cool at night, with everything lit up, the ferris wheel on Navy Pier, the skyline, wow! The Chicago club will have to organize a cruise one of these weekends. Maybe drive up through the natural beauty of Wisconsin, hook up with the WI club, and drive down through Chicago. Cheers, Steve |
Sheridan Rd... from Evanston going North...

If you want to have some fun I HIGHLY suggest you guys do this little trip that WRX guys organize (I'm sure if you asked nicely they would love to have you along). There just happens to be one this coming weekend. There's some gravel, but that's the best part!

Originally posted by flipstream Sheridan Rd... from Evanston going North... There aren't a whole lot of roads around here that are fun to drive on, or are at least long enough to be significant. If any of you have been up to Door County, Wisconsin, there's a road just outside of Sturgeon Bay called Glidden Drive. It's 7 miles long and follows the lake shore and is the absolute curviest road I've found. It winds through a forest and has some really good scenery, but you have to watch yourself as there's apt to be people or deer along the road. Still I haven't been up there yet with my '8, but I literally cannot wait to let her rip up that road. :D |
