WTF with the snow, NM

What is with this snow in Albuquerque?

My RX-8 just got shipped here last week. And then this crap hits.

I live out a bit from town, up a pretty decent incline..... I had to take 5 tries to get up it, since its about a mile. The last half was 45deg the whole way.... feck me, I am glad my wife has a truck, tho it aint here yet.

Haha. Yeah, I had only the 8 my first winter. Its a nightmare in the snow. I wouldn't even try it with summer tires. When I bought a second car, I made sure it was all-wheel drive!

I don't think I've even tried to drive the 8 in the snow in the nearly 4 years I've had it. And I don't have any plans to break that record anytime soon. I started out using the reason of not getting it dirty, but quickly moved over to not with those summer OEM tires - that after hearing everyone else's experiences. Now that I have M/S tires on the 8 maybe I should at least see what it does on the snow, right? Nah...

The good news...the snow will not be around long.

Being from Missouri and traveling back and forth from my work location in Artesia during the winter months I popped for winter tires and wheels. Its funny to think that I am probably one of the few cars in town to actually have full winter skins on the most unlikely vehicle.... .

Actually, I have driven mine a few times with my summer tires on the snow/ice and as long as you don't stop on a hill your good to go. But it is little teeth biting. ABS and Traction kick in a lot. Usually the Sunfire is weapon of choice for these snow days. Doesn't help when the idiot truckers crash and block all lanes on the freeway like Tuesday night. Ali and I were stuck on freeway for over 2 hours. Not fun.... N10S Snow tires should do the trick for you.

I got a chance to try the Pirelli Wintersports out on black ice conditions in Artesia yesterday morning. Roads were slick as hell, and a few accidents around town with one car flipped on its roof in a bar ditch. The Pirelli's did a decent job overall, although black ice is stud and chain territory. I could make the rear-end kick-out by revving the throttle, but it was holding a line otherwise, and where I was seeing people sliding on brake action I was just slowing down in a controlled fashion. I think with the right tires the RX8 seems to do ok in slick snow/ice conditions as long as the snow isn't too deep.

Yeah these OEM tires are a freakin nightmare. Never never never again.

My wife has a 4x4 Dodge, but its hasnt been shipped yet. If we get more snow before it gets here, work will just have to deal with it, because I was a damn accident waiting to happen.

I have the OEM tires and have not had too much problems in this weather. I am more worried about other people hitting me lol.

Just go slow! Thats all I can say.

RX8PDX 02-23-2007 03:43 PM

Seriously, go to Rio Rancho and take Southern road west. There is a hill thats about a mile long, at about 30deg or so. Slow was not an option with the OEM tires.

Hell, I had to get some dog food at the Walmart there, and I couldnt even get into the parking lot. There was 3 people that pushed me, and once I got to one of the isle, I backed in, and parked.

If I hadnt of made it up my hill when I did, I would have seriously tried going up backwards.

Its not snow that was the problem with that last snow, it was the ice. The snow was melting from the ground being warm at first, and created just a sheet of ice.

zeblien 02-23-2007 11:20 PM

lol uh huh.

Joking! I looked for some alt tires, but non to be found. I have a 20 mile trek to work, and that took a good while ... stupid ice.
