my rx8 wont start
 

my girlfriend started the car last night and after a few seconds it back fired an cut out, the car had been stood since saturday, and wont start back up

have you tried the "flooded car start procedure"? BAsically, get in the car, floor the gas pedal and THEN try to turn it over, let it turn over for about 10 sec. Turn the car all the way off, then try to start it normally.

I suspect it's flooded. Very common if you start the car and then turn it off cold. does it sound like it's just spinning and there is no compression or like the starter is not turning the motor? That's flooding. You've washed all the oil off the rotor housings with too much gas and lost compression. Not damaging or fatal but annoying.

There is a deflooding procedure in your manual. Basically push the gas pedal to the floor before starting the car to tell the car to stop pumping fuel. Then see if that turns it over.

If you can't get it to run using that you need to pull your spark plugs and inject a few CCs of oil in to your engine through the spark plug holes to try and get some compression back. Do a search on DIY deflooding for more details. If that fails you can get it towed to the dealer and they will deflood it for you.
