Texas-wide Mazda Meet in Austin -- January 7, 2005 -- 50+ cars so far!

The Mazda6Club is having their Texas Statewide Meet at Mansfield Dam Park in Austin on January 7, 2006 at 1:00 PM.

Currently, the plan is to meet at Mansfield Dam Park off of Lake Travis at 1pm. We will have BBQ (for those who pre-pay) and then spend some time hangin' out and such. In the evening, we're planning to take a drive in the hill country or see the sights of Austin for those interested. Around 9 or 10, those interested will head to 6th Street and the Warehouse district.

Mazda South is currently planning to bring a Mazdaspeed6 out. If one is unavailable they will at least bring out an 06 for us. They also plan to bring some Mazda koozies, t-shirts, hats, etc. depending on what they have on hand at the time. As some of you may or not know, Mazda South runs mazdastuff.com which I mentioned so there is a possibility of them giving away something bigger lottery style. T-shirts are a possibility as well. We're currently researching the details.

Food:

$10 a person if you will be joining us for Rudy's BBQ. Money will be due Thursday January 5, 2006 so we can place the order on Friday. To reserve your food, CLICK HERE. If you have a meat preference (see below), specify it with your payment.

What the $10 will get you:
* 1/2 lb Sliced Meat Per Person *
(Brisket, Turkey, Pork Loin, Spicy Chopped or Sausage)
Chicken & Ribs may be added NOT substituted.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
3 Deli Side Dishes
(Spicy Beans, Potato Sasld, Cole Slaw, Cream Corn, or New Potatoes)
Sliced Pickles, Onions & Whole Jalapenos
Fresh Sliced White Bread
Rudy's Bar-B-Q "SAUSE"
Brewed Iced Tea
Bagged Ice
20 oz Rudy's Trophy Cups
Lemons
Sugar and Sweet & Low
Plastic Packs
(fork, knife, spoon, napkin, salt & pepper)
Plates
Serving Utensils & Tongs
Checkered Tablecloth

Now as far January and weather issues, there is a very good reason for the date we picked. It is fall break for college students! That allows some of the younger folks that aren't from Austin to attend. Otherwise it would be pushed to May. I would expect another meet from us in the summer but that is too far off to plan for now.

You can also view the full Mazda6Club thread HERE.

If you know anyone else who drives a Mazda and would like to come, please invite them here or reply for them.

Hope to see you there!

colin204 12-14-2005 07:33 PM

count me in, add me to the RX8 list

adrian-1 12-14-2005 07:56 PM

I'm free that Saturday. Add me also.

canaryrx8 12-15-2005 09:58 AM

cool, I'll make it out to that, if you guys send me the details I'll add it to the texasrxs.org site and all the other places I frequent.

Str8cold 12-15-2005 11:45 AM

Might be able to make to down there for that.

AForce8 12-15-2005 10:22 PM

alright...looks to be about five 8's now: ALWAZL8, DAZY, JENKINS, COOP....WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS DOING THIS DAY??

dazygirl415 12-16-2005 02:44 AM

I'm not sure... I've got some work things going on that week, but I may be able to make it out for this. I'll have to check my calendar at work next week.

jenkins-crew 12-16-2005 07:03 AM

My first planned trip to Austin isn't till May 6. I will be recovering from hoiday spending :D:

canaryrx8 12-28-2005 11:12 AM

had a question, I posted this on the texasrxs site and had a few folks pm me and ask if they don't pay the 10 bucks can they still come out? my assumption is the 10$ is if you want to eat correct?

dazygirl415 12-28-2005 11:22 AM

Just an FYI for DFW owners, this is the same day as our monthly meet.

falcontx 12-28-2005 11:43 AM

Yes, the $10 is for the food. Anyone is welcome to stop by. I beliece that Mansfield Dam Park may charge an entrance fee, but that would be all you would need to pay.

jenkins-crew 12-28-2005 09:33 PM

Can't make it to Austin, but definatly mcaurthur.

Parmer8 12-29-2005 01:46 AM

I'm going to try to make it also. It would be great if the Austin 8s can meet up and drive there together. Park entrance fee is $8/car.

adrian-1 12-29-2005 04:52 PM

I'm in also. Just tell me where to meet.

Str8cold 12-29-2005 05:05 PM

Should be able to make it if someone could send me some directions that would be great.

falcontx 12-29-2005 05:07 PM

Looks like I am not going to be able to make it due to Mazdaparts taking forever and a F'ing day to ship my front bumper, ordered it on Dec 22nd they billed me for it the 26th and did not ship it until the 29th finally showed up January 3rd. Its going into paint this weekend so hopefully it will be dry enough to install this Sunday. I was looking forward to making it down for this and partying with some friends in San Marcos that weekend.

So are we going to do the meeting spot before heading down there?

I'll make the decision if no one objects. How about we meet at Rudy's on 2222/620 area at 12:30. I'm going to eat there instead (to forgo the crowd). We can head out around 1pm since it's not too far from there.

Don't forget to bring $8 for the park entrance.

I'm in! I just paid for my bbq, too. I'm up for meeting with the 8s at Rudy's on 620/2222 as well.

1200 miles of driving for an event that will last a few hours? I will probably pass.

It was fun. Perfect weather.
We had 4 RX8's, 1 RX7 (LS1 swap), lots of Mazda6's, 3's, and protege's. Also, the Mazdaspeed6 was there.

I'm sorry about sounding negative, but I cant possibly be the only one that thinks having "Corvette" written on the inside of an RX7 is pretty stupid.

...and is that a frickin' GTO sticker on the side?!

Parmer8 01-07-2006 08:24 PM

It was a nice turn out. Weather was perfect for.....January! All of my pictures are pretty much the same as Adrian's.

I personally think it's neat to fit another engine in any car..piston or rotary. I have to say that it does sound mean.

The sticker is "GTU".

purists might agree with you, but I surely don't after seeing and hearing the swap first hand. The LS1 is not much different size and weight wise from a comparable rotary powerplant, not to mention parts availability, ease of maintenance, loud ass exhaust note that is pure sex, etc etc etc. I'd be willing to bet homedude probably had just about everyone there wanting his car after he started it up and left as well lol

adrian-1 01-08-2006 02:25 AM

Actually the weight difference is quite different. I believe he commented on it being 100lbs heavier.

canaryrx8 01-08-2006 10:15 AM

really?!? I've read elsewhere that it's not but oh well, must be the "corvette" valve covers that add the extra weight :D:

Nemesis9 01-08-2006 01:30 PM

I wanted to say it was great meeting all of you yesterday. The event was fun; it was very cool to see all the Mazda enthusiasts that came out. It could have been much larger if the Miata and RX-7 communities were better represented.

This is true, but I should have explained myself a little better. The LS1 is about 100lbs heavier then the original N/A motor that came in the GTU model. The car is actually still about 100lbs lighter than a stock TurboII. What most people do not realize is the weight difference on the turbo cars.

1990 Weights

*GTU - 2800lbs
*TurboII - 3003lbs
*Vert - 3045lbs
*LS1 Swapped GTU - ~2900lbs

The weight on the swap is also distributed behind the front axle. I would say my car, if it is slightly skewed from the 50/50 balance, would be slightly rear heavy due to the cage. I am taking it to be corner balanced once the final bugs are worked out.

Anyone interested in finding out more information on the swap can either PM me or check out the following links.

I'm sorry you feel this way, they obviously don't make covers that say Mazda. I imagine custom covers would get expensive. I'll move that ahead of my new heads and cam for you in the priority list. ;)

I'd be happy to take you for a ride if you ever make it to Austin.

I hope to be out to the majority of the TEXASRX's meets and drives. If any of you guys would like to go for a ride or take it for a quick spin just let me know.

Adrian - The pictures and video came out great, thanks for doing that. I want a ride in your turbo'd car next time.

Once again, it was great meeting all of you and I hope to see you guys at future events. I should be attending the TEXASRX's drive this Saturday. Hope to see you there.

Brian

dude! I know your name now! (I'm Randall by the way) Glad you made it out as well, too bad you couldn't have someone bring out the REPU as well as that would have been pretty sweet having all the rotaries lined up and so forth. I still think we had a decent presence out there, but dang there were a lot of Protege's!! That was a fun time meeting all the other Mazda owners and seeing the MSpeed 6 up close, nice job on the swap by the way, engine looked right at home in there.

The REPU is about to have it's engine pulled and rebuilt. It smokes like crazy on startup right now. Once I rebuild the motor, I'll be driving it around more.

I've been thinking about heading down to the dealer and taking the MazdaSpeed 6 for a drive. I could always use a new daily driver... :)

The GTU was a factory designation. Nothing rice there.

I bet that thing is fast. I may have seen it riding around Austin. Maybe on 1431.

Yeah, I have a small garage off of 1431 and 183. I also frequent the Home Depot show on Saturday nights, stop by and introduce yourself if you see me out there.

That is where I saw you. Near 1431 and Bagdad road. I often take Bagdad up north to avoid 183 traffic.

What is this Home Depot show on Saturday nights? Sounds interesting.

it's a weekly gathering of cars every saturday night at the home depot parking lot right there at parmer and 1431, usually has a pretty decent turn out and a pretty decent variety of vehicles, haven't been in a while myself however, maybe next weekend I might plan on going.
