I'm new here
Hi all!
My name is Pablo. Not much to say. I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm looking at buying an RX-8 right now. Anything I should check? I own a 1988 RX-7 but it decided to be difficult with me again so that's going to be strictly a project car instead of a project/daily. I have met a few of the members on here that go to the monthly rotary meet in san antonio at the pig stand. One member with an RX-8 was there last time but other then that no one showed up. Hopefully activity with that will pick up when the weather isn't cold/rainy. :Peace: |
Whats up Pablo...
Since you already own a 7 and are probably already pretty familiar with rotary engines, you won't have as much to learn as a lot of people looking to buy 8s. Here is a good thread you should check out before buying anything ---> https://www.rx8club.com/new-member-forum-197/new-potential-owners-start-here-202454/ And I don't think you will have any trouble finding other 8 owners around the San Antonio area. There is a small army of them on here haha. Look around in the regional forum for the Gulf area... Welcome! |
Check out the SARX thread. That's where a lot of the San Antonio regulars post. All good people. We get together once a year for a Texas Wide RX8 meet. Feel free to post in here (Gulf Section) with any questions you have and we will all be happy to answer any questions you have.
And the only suggestion I'd make is try and find something '06 and newer. While it's not full proof, most of the people I've seen that have had major problems had an '04 and some '05s. Not saying an '06 or newer won't...it's just been my personal experience that most of the kinks got worked out by then. And yes, you will probably need a new engine by 100K miles. |
Que Paso Pablo!
I missed the last Pig Stand meet but I will be at the next one. Welcome to the site and if you need help in choosing a car, let me know. I'd be glad to help. Several SARX members are long time, or multiple RX-8 owners. |
9krpmrx8 should be able to help you out down there. He seems to be a good guy hahaha;)

Welcome...
we will try to make the next Pigstand meet... here is the link I saved when I was searching to replace my last RX-8... http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/search...=1253547710238 not sure what your budget is but get an 06 or higher.Get the carfax. have Mazda run the VIN to verify all TSBs have been done. Any 09 + is the series 2 which has some cosmetic changes an additonal oil injector and a newer MT trans. I like this one...:smoker: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...e&rdpage=thumb Like 9k said let us know if you need any help... |

Cool thanks for all the replies. The rx8's I have been looking at are all 06 and newer oddly enough.
100k for a new engine? seems kind of short imo. I do know my way around a rotary at an amateur level I guess. I have taken apart my first motor and I keep it around for decoration now. I'm not a master mechanic but I have done quite a bit of work on my car, so I think taking care of an rx8 shouldn't be too much of a problem. I hope I find something for a good price. |

The series 1 (2004-2008 renesis) engine is faulted from a design standpoint so even with meticulous maintenance the engine will not typically last longer than 100,000 miles. And honestly usually it is much less than 100,000 miles. But if you are ok financially and plan on keeping the car a few years and do not drive much then you should be okay if you get a properly maintained low mileage RX8. But if you are a broke kid and cannot afford to address issues as they arise then this is not the car for you. Many buy the RX8 and then bitch about the maintenance costs and gas mileage. Do your reserach and make an educated decision. |
