Great driving roads near Houston?
Gents; I'm new to Houston. Are there any great roads to just go for a drive near Houston. Something similar to the thread below out of Austin / San Antonio?

Good luck findy any such thing in TX, Hill country included.

you have some nice tracks near houston. may want to check that out and keep the spirited driving off the streets.

I've been to MSR and TWS and they're great. But now I'm just looking for a scenic drive, some twisties, but nothing that I'm going to drive like and idiot on. Any suggestions?

Here's a nice twisty - I let a friend drive my 8. He took off like he'd stolen it and hauled ass around the cloverleaf. Good thing I have leather seats. :Eyecrazy:

Heh, that's the Waugh/Memorial intersection isn't it...
We had a famous club drive through there once... I was driving my legendary 4 rotor RX-7 back then. |
That's too funny! I live less than 1/4mile from Waugh/Memorial. Can't see myself doing laps there........lol

I live in the Montgomery area and can vouch for these roads. Just be carefull of the local constabulary and highway patrol.....other wise known as the "brown" shirt police! |
Anyone want to do a driving tour in January. i can put together a 300 mile (or less) tour of backroads for us. I've got maps of various areas around the area ready to go.
There are some amazing roads to the northeast of Houston in the Piney Woods as well as the Anderson Loop run (near College Station), it's not exactly exciting but kinda fun there is a route from the SW side (Sugarland area) south towards the coast. |
I've been wishing for something like that to happen.... What kind of route's do you have in mind?
|
Honestly i'd like to do one called the Woodville Trail. It heads out 59 North then explores the hills and woods of East Texas (east of 59)
I don't have the exact route in front of me. |
I'd be up for that!
|
Count me in as well. I go backroad hunting all the time in the Northern areas of Houston (North of the Beltway), so if you're looking for some roads in that area let me know - I know of a few good ones.
|
Sounds like fun, I'd tag along

My Favorites still the FM 149 (But Watch out the speed traps) and FM 3090 Those two roads are close by. You can drive both in the same trip.

Thanks Yellow888. Went out and ran 149 and 3090 in both directions on Sunday afternoon. Great roads, particularly 3090. Thanks for the recommendation! Got mixed in with 3 Z06 Vettes on 149; fast cars!

"Better Living Through Chemistry" allows us to create the the illusion. Why not create your own real time illusion like we do here in Austin, us having no roads at all, but lot's of old peyote' ??:uhh: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- But seriously.................. Almost every place in Texas has FM/CR back roads worth driving; a little time & effort will locate them. As for Houston roads, check the Houston Club/Dr. Kildare &**AAA Maps,**the best for locating low traffic county roads. LD:SHOCKED: |
what about beltway 8? I feel like I own that stretch of road... Mostly the part you have to pay for... Not many cops, plus the occasional hill keeps you safe from radar... I love driving the 8 in my 8 :)

Anybody from South Houston that takes Westheimer Parkway. I always drive my car around 5, it's a beautiful road watching the sun fade.
