DFW Looking for opinions on new tires
So I've been watching my tires wear pretty quickly. I bought a set of Kumo's for 115 each that have lasted barely 15k miles (prob more like 10k)
What I am looking for: Price: 120-150 (cheaper is better) Grip: Want a tire with a grip that lasts throughout the life of the tire Wear: will last more than 10k freakin miles Dont really care much about anything else. So far the dealer recommended the following: Goodyear Eagle GT http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....autoModel=RX-8 6-speed&autoModClar= Sumitomo HTR ZIII http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....autoModel=RX-8 6-speed&autoModClar= What I am looking at: General Exclaim UHP http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....autoModel=RX-8 6-speed&autoModClar= Yoko S.drive http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....autoModel=RX-8 6-speed&autoModClar= So with that being said, let me know what you guys think. The ones I am looking at seem to have better ratings on TireRack than the ones the dealer recommended. Also if you know of better tires in my price range or know of some deals that normally wouldnt be that cheap, please let me know that as well. |
tires...
I just got rid of my dunlop dz101's and moved the good year eagle gt's. I also moved from stock 225/45/18 to 245/40/18.
So far have liked these tire alot better than the dz101's, they seem to have alot better grip with alot better ride although it could be the size change that made the difference. Also they handle amazing in the rain compared to the dunlops i hade before. Just got them so dont know how they will grip through the life of the tire but so far love them and would recomend them and hopefully with the 400 tread wear rating i can make them last. |
does BFGoodrich make anything in that price range? I've had good luck with wear on their tires, my KDW2's seem to last forever and that is with camber on the rear. :dunno:
|
i have the Sumitomo HTR ZIII
they grip pretty good, had them on for 8,000 miles so far ish, seem to be wearing ok, tread design is weird i bought these due to my stocks becoming like slicks in the rain... only complaint is the thread pattern is some what weird it looks directional but isnt it has a inside and outside section i had some weird outside wear on the tires so now i have my camber set back out slightly aggressive -1.4 fronts -1.8 rear should even out the tire wear and makes austin roads more fun ^_^. also your driving style and aggressiveness will effect them massively |
Hankook Ventus V12 Evo. I love 'em. I bought mine from discount tire and got a much better deal than Tirerack.
|
I have the UHPs they have great dry traction but when its wet you can slide it out pretty easily
|
DONT BUY CRAP TIRES!
If i was you I would get Bridgestone Potenza RE040; they are on special at tirerack for $125. Also the BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2 are also on special for $142; quality tire that you can get some miles out of and they prvide good grip (wet & dry) but they will get loud after some wear. But i still vote for the Potenza's |
my next set of tires will be goodyear eagle GT's. time for something long lasting and all season.
|
Idk man, the Tiger Paw seems to be the beez kneez of the tires today... http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....er+Paw+Tour+SR
I mean who wouldnt want the worst tire ever... These babies would provide you with hours of enjoyment making your 8 feel like it has alot of power, the ability to break traction is limitless!!! |
Can't speak for the RX8 since I just got mine, but have nothing but praise for the Goodyear that I have on my Avalanche (i know it's a truck - but the tires have been great) Also when I bought mine I took a copy of the best deal I had down to Discount Tire and they matched the price. Nice to have a "local" dealer that will balance and rotate for free...

Well I have goodyear gt's, performance is awesome in all conditions. Thread life is well less than to be desired, I'm at 13k and needing to replace 1, actually going to do two though. Looks like the last time they rotated them they didn't speed balance the one right. The other three have over half left. I would recommend them, just watch the rotations and stat away from ntb. Discount has them for 150ish but will price match with tirerack which has them for 129.

I have had good luck in the past with the Cooper Zeon 2XS, it comes in our size. I ran them on another car that was pushing 600 whp, they were great traction wet/dry, great on cornering prowess, and had decent tread wear characteristics. They are in the 145-150 price neighborhood.

Yeah I saw those bridgestones and remembered how much you liked them, but its pretty hard for me to go for that purchase since it has such craptacular ratings on tire rack.
I think I am going to try the HTR ZIII and see how those go. Thomas, did you get those and if so how do you like them? I am going to have to replace mine sometime in the next week or so. As I mentioned before I'm leaning towards the Goodyear Eagle GT's but thought i might check everything out first. |

I'm not 100% satisfied with them because I don't think they are "sticky" enough, but I have no idea how much this is due to the tire or the sways. |
if you can muster up a bit more cash, i recommend Michelin pilot sport a/s'
i got em at discount for $232 but the main reason was i have a warranty on them for 45k or i get 1/2 off the next set ;) traction is great, kinda miss being able to slip haha and their amazing in water, havent had any close calls with wet streets since i got them :D: never regretted it! http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...ort+A%2FS+Plus |

Thomas - reading the reviews on this one...which size did you go with - 225-45-18's or 245-40-18's

225/45/18 is stock.
|
Get 245/40/18 this is "plus" size and will fit the factory wheels. Gives you about another inch of tire width. We put new tires on the wife's LY right before the meet and they handled excellent on the run. I could tell the difference from driving on the stock size 225/45/18. The brand we went with was Herclues Raptis and with installation they ran $450. 9k (Scott) recommended them and I am happy with them....

I'm running Kumho ecsta spt 225-45-18 $127.00 ea at tire rack and I'm very pleased with them.
Good grip and quieter than the Dunlops that came stock. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....oModClar=Grand Touring |
