Cleaning SSV in Dallas

My check engine light is showing code P2070 tuning valve stuck, I just purchased my car and really don't have the funds to pay to go to the dealer to have it fixed but I am willing to learn how to do it myself if anyone in Dallas is willing to help me I won't to learn to work on my car myself to save money and for the knowledge of doing it myself. So if anyone is willing your help will be very appreciated.

Hey buddy, I havent done this either yet but I need to for my car. Ive never cleaned my SSV but im sure we can learn. Go post on the NTX lounge in the gulf forum and im sure we can all set something up.

Antonio 12-28-2010 09:14 PM

Sounds like a plan are you getting a check engine light also?

WTBRotary! 12-28-2010 09:17 PM

Nope but it cant hurt. Mine has almost 50K miles on it so I think its time to clean it. Im gonna do some reseach on how to remove it and what to remove the carbon with. send me a PM and ill toss you my cell number. I believe I can get a friend to help and clean his as well. ill post on the NTX lounge and see if anyone else would like to join in, maybe we can get a SSV cleaning day.

Check the DIY section, there is a step by step procedure in there

there is also a way to check to see if it is sticking, explained in the same thread

That a boy Scott!!! I was gonna text you and see if you'd like to join. I've checked out the DIY but the more the merrier! Ill add you to the list. Any dates sound good to people?

JantzenRX-8 12-29-2010 10:45 PM

I just did this a few weekends ago. It's a big job but pretty easy with the DIY. It helps to have some u-joints and if you're doing multiple you may all want to go in together and get a bucket of carb cleaner with a dip tray ($20). It was cheaper for me just to get a few bottles but i bet the bucket would make the cleaning process a lot easier. Remember to all bring coolant too since you have to drain the rad and pull the thermostat housing.

Happy DIYing :D:

this it was mine looked like after 70k

And this is what you have to look forward to :)

Hey, Jantzen, guess what!

You're INVITED!

Bullitt 12-29-2010 11:34 PM

Seriously. I have a guest bedroom, and I'm a Sooner fan who's part Comanche.

Jon316G 12-29-2010 11:42 PM

An SSV gathering party... wow :)

Like JantzenRX-8 mentioned... make sure you have coolant, carb cleaner, and a drip tray.
I would also include some shop rags, especially since I've always had coolant in the rad hose when I removed it from the thermostat... so I stuff a rag in there and usually zip-tie the hose to the side so the opening is upright.
I've also used q-tips to get in the little crevices of the valve.
Good luck!

cornholio135 12-30-2010 11:27 AM

Good Luck Guys I did this on MY WB before I got rid of it took an entire day... and you WILL have trouble starting it just be patient till it turns over and watch the smoke cloud from the carb cleaner...

Personally, I would skip the ipod connection and just get a regular 1/8th jack connection that can connect to all devices. I have a grom audio and love mine and I also helped WTB (Brandon) install his and he's told me he loves it (though to be fair he was comparing it to one of those RF deals he had before)

WTBRotary! 12-31-2010 01:07 PM

I'm glad we helped ya out Antonio. We got
3 SSV's cleaned yesterday. Whew and yeah Riley (Thomas) is what I was talking about Antonio. I have a Grom adapter. It's not a bad install and pretty easy, plus they don't cost much either ;).

Haha and Jeff don't worry about paying me, just help
Me out when I start to AutoX lol

Jon316G 12-31-2010 01:08 PM

3 SSVs... good job!
Glad everything worked out well for you guys!

WTBRotary! 12-31-2010 01:16 PM

Haha thanks Jon for your video, it wasn't that hard, think thermostat install except remove the lower thermostat housing , switch and the 2 bolts for the SSV. It was just time consuming.

Though SSV days are tough, whew...

WTBRotary! 12-31-2010 01:18 PM

I would of taken pics of mine but I really didn't need to clean mine. I am almost at 50k Miles and my SSV was pretty clean still :)

Jon316G 12-31-2010 01:21 PM

Yeah... getting to the switch and those two bolts are tricky and I use a magnetic rod to catch the bolts so they don't fall into the abyss.
Removing the UIM makes it easier to remove the SSV switch and bolts, but may not be worth it for those who have never removed the UIM before since that is always tricky for the 1st timers.
Like anything else... you pick up little tricks the more times you do it ;)
