Team has a another solution.
Its more expensive but .... offers some more functionality as well I will try and find the link edit http://rotarydiagnostics.com/ |
Thanks for posting so quickly.
Yes, I saw that one, but really liked the TR-01 (even though it shows less info than the one in your link), since it is a complete all-in-one deal, and shows the numbers right on it. And the price was pretty good ($260 for the group buy IIRC). If you or anyone has more info, please post. |

Basically:
1.Is this tester still for sale by the company? 2.Is there a new version? 3.How much? 4.Will we ever see another group buy? 5.Could they make a simpler/cheaper version using a sensor that would plug into a smartphone using a specific app? The last one is more me thinking out loud :D |

TR was a bit late on the delivery of the V2 model but I think everyone that ordered received their purchased. 2) Just version V1.0 and V2.0 3) 350$ usd .... plus shipping 4) doubt it 5) Anything is possible I suppose Where are you located? |
Toronto, Canada. Was hoping to get one sometime in the future.

Maybe we can meet up one weekend or do a spring meet if you just want to do a compression test. |
Sounds great!

New tester
Y'all-
Ok so I loaned my TR01 compression tester to a buddy who broke it. He didn't do it on purpose of course, but in the end it's still broken. So I had little choice but to repair it or go back to the old school way of doing things. I decided to do neither and instead develop a new one. Seems like everyone I know was asking to borrow mine and since they weren't being made any longer, I saw a need to help the rotary community, which I am a huge fan of doing. Mostly I hang out on the RX7 forum too, though not much lately due to work and the divorce. But I'm getting off in the weeds here... Anyway, just wanted to let you know that my version will be available soon. Initial testing looks good and mine won't be that much different than John's so those of you familiar with it won't have much of a leap to be able to use it. I am accepting feature requests (and several of my friends have chimed in, believe me) but bear in mind that I'm opting to keep it simple in order to keep it at roughly the same price point, amongst other reasons. Thanks, Jerry |
I would like to see a flow diagram of the logic you propose to use, and of how you propose to test it.

Logic is straightforward, though I am still ironing out a couple of ideas. As for testing, the plan is to repair my TR01 unit and do comparison testing with it and even a conventional pneumatic compression tester (mostly for fun, but whichever). I have a few engines sitting around that I'll use in the testing process, and I plan on offering free compression checks at an upcoming local rotary car club meeting to increase the sample pool. I suspect that with a pool size of at least ten and likely twenty or more, I should be ok. Hope this helps. Thanks. |
QUICK UPDATE
Not certain if I should begin a new thread or not regarding this project, but I thought I'd at least post a quick update on the progress to-date. After several design changes (and accompanying "mind changes" - lol), seemingly-endless component R&D and an extended 3-month battle with an unexpected - but quite serious - health issue, I have finally completed the first prototype. Well, that is except for the enclosure, I couldn't find a commercial-off-the-shelf offering that looked "professional enough" and that would cleanly house the components that comprise the device. So I am working with an enclosure guy to develop a custom box. Anyway, I am happy with the initial testing. More is to follow of course, but I am hopeful to have a production version ready by the end of the year. Obstacles remain, the biggest of which is a requirement that I have maintained since the outset and that is to develop a device for a reasonable cost. I'm trying to stay under the beverage-beer-spending-don't-need-to-tell-the-other-half line in the sand. While producing an accurate instrumentation tool. And a tool that is reliable. And good quality. And that uses good materials and components. And that looks at least halfway "professional." And that meets the additional requirements that I decided to pursue. And that is something I want in my own toolbox. But that's been part of the fun really, working through the engineering, design and project management challenges that such an endeavor presents. So we'll see. This post is only an FYI. To be open, I don't know how much of a need there is for this sort of thing, but that hasn't been my motivation. It's been a journey (hell an odyssey really) and I've learned a great deal, which was always a large part of the reason I began working on this side project. After coming through the health thing, I'm more determined to finish than I was in March or April or whenever it was that I started down this road. Whatever comes after that isn't all that important to me really. This has been fun, but it's also kept me from working on the stuff I really wanna work on, which are my cars. So it's time to finish up. But hey, no complaints. I'll get back to that soon enough. Ok enough meandering. I digress. Thanks for reading. |
glad your doing ok. looking foward to a cheaper tester
|
Thanks for the update.
You might want to start you're own thread with all the goodness in it. |

I tried to post in the General Topics section of the forum tonight but was denied access. Not sure why, perhaps it is because of my low post count of 4 (now 5)? I sent email to the admins, we'll see what happens.
Thanks |

Ok RIWWP,
Thanks. Low post count, understood. I run my own vB forum, so I can relate to the spam issue. I own 3 RX7s, so I hang out in that forum more often, but hopefully I can be considered a "brother" on the RX8club forum. Anyway, I guess I'll create a new thread regarding the tester in the new member forum. Seems like a bit of an odd place to do that, but hey, no problem. Glad to comply with whatever restrictions y'all want. Again, I have to deal with that myself in my forum. Thanks! |
Ok the new compression tester thread is in the New Member forum here:
