Groovy Guy: Charles at BHR

Yeah, the forum really does need another one of these threads.

A few years ago, I purchased a very nice BHR midpipe. At some point, I decided it would be a great idea to have an HJS motorsports cat welded into it, and I took it to the "premier" exhaust shop in the area. Long story short, that didn't go well. The result was a little over an inch too long, which made the pipe chirp like a flock of angry canaries in heat. Attempts to fix it resulted in a bent flange and a very bad exhaust leak.

At this point, I email Charles about having BHR fix it for me. To my astonishment, he agreed to take on a set of problems created by someone else. A few weeks later, it was back in my hands, sporting a new flange, and some VERY nice welds. He could have charged me nearly anything he wanted for this service, yet he quoted me a very fair price, that included his itemized costs.

The pipe now fits properly without annoying noises, nor exhaust leaks.

Thanks again, Charles!

He is just a genuinely good dude and a dying breed in today's world, there isn't much more to say really.

Steve: happy to hear the positive outcome but honestly it doesn't surprise me because as 9k said, that's just who Ray is.

out of curiosity, which HJS cat did you go with? Is that the same one that Ray offers with the midpipe?

The part number for my HJS cat is: 9095 0182. I purchased it from HJS NA, which is no longer in business. It was pretty pricey at $720, but I need something that can stand up to track abuse.

I have attached a photo of the whole pipe, before BHR fixed it, to give you an idea of its relative size.

To be forthright; I never offered the HJS catalyst, although I have happily installed them when sent to me by a midpipe customer for installation on their BHR Midpipe. In addition, I felt bad about having taken so long on Steve's midpipe but I was having delays in my supply chain, which I am still in the process of final shakeout, but things are improving and should be finalized in the next 10 days or so.

Err... I'm not sure what he's talking about here. It took a few weeks to get the pipe back, but he kept me informed on regular intervals, and I was never in a hurry, so this is basically unnecessary self-flagellation.

(I had my healthy OE cat installed, was happily driving the car as my daily, while my truck was in the body shop, and was not worried about an extra few days here or there. That pipe is for long-term reliability and track abuse, and we are not talking about either here.)

In any case, the car is now ready for the fall track season, sans horny canaries, and sans raging exhaust leaks.

A couple of weeks for custom work is not unreasonable in the slightest, in my opinion. The timeline was communicated up front, regular updates were given, the work was done beautifully, and the price was fair. You didn't have to take the pipe at all, after Chewbacca screwed it up, and I'm just tickled pink (I own a Miata, ya know!) that you did.

My grandmother once gave me a sage bit of advice: "Now, Sweetie... When someone says, 'Thank you,' just say, 'You're welcome,' and learn to accept gratitude, without pushing back on every little thing that didn't meet your perfectionist standards." She was right. ;)

I'm a happy camper.

Happy to hear.

Glad to hear work was good, i ordered a header from Charles back in April and sad to say still waiting for it over 2 months later. Went with BHR since i have heard his work is top notch, but feel after being told 2 week lead time, by Charles, that over 2 months and at least another 2 weeks to wait, again per Charles, is a bit accessive. Seems that by the time i get this, and get it installed will be next year before i can even enjoy it. I don't want anyone to think Charles does not do top notch work, because he is the best, imo, but 3 months is a long time to wait for a $2k header. Especially when you live in a state you only get about 4 months to really enjoy it. So just be ready to wait for items guys, and don't assume them to be in stock.

Have we not remained in discussion about the issues I am confronting and have I not continuously offered you a full refund?

Never claimed you had not, in fact even said you do excellent work, but have I not been told many of times will be shipped in a week and then after a week or so i email you and get a response about something either you cnc guy or your weilder has been fired...or quit both happened. Now i understand things happen and after 3 months feel i have been very patient but then read you are taking in weld work on cats. I understand you have a business to run, but i also paid the 2k for the header you just decided to refund me i guess sicne i warned people it could take some time. So keep that in mind to everyone Charles is great guy unless you let someone know about a long wait time... and say he does great work. Thanks for the great service.

Another happy customer

Need to add to this thread:

Just received my BHR coils + wires today. Installation went relatively well. Grandpa was visiting and gave me a hand during installation. I was super impatient for whatever reason, LOL. Guess I just really wanted to try them out.

One of my OEM coils(specifically, the L1) already has a white spot under it(you know, the little white spots you will find on the bottom of dying coils), and they were only 4000 km old(needed a new set quickly when I got the car, and I deeply regret buying them).

The BHR ones came pretty quickly in a week, with expensive Priority Mail. Turns out, I paid $30 for a $45 service. That's already a pleasant surprise. I opened the box, and found a bunch of gifts! Very nice of BHR. I really like the little toy monkey and actually tried to slingshot it, and it flew pretty far!:D:

The setup is pretty expensive, but the quality is also very high, so it's worth it, and I have very high hopes with everyone's experience with these coils here. Honestly, the only BS expensive part is the custom(paid CAN$90 for custom:crying:), which we don't have control over.

Went out for a drive after the installation, and my car felt a bit peppier than before. Idling is a bit smoother, driving is a bit smoother, and getting off the line is also a bit easier. I will see if there is any gas mileage change after a couple of tanks.
