Z4 - worst EPA mileage discrepancy according to AAA

AAA conducted tests to determine whether promises posted on new car stickers actually held up under real-world conditions.

In not a single case did AAA findings compare to those slick sticker claims, according to the report.

"We had a real gut feeling that the numbers were inflated, and of course the tests bore that out," AAA manager O.S. Brannon said. "Is it deceptive? Yes, it is right now."

The BMW Z-4 was the biggest offender, according to the report.

The EPA rating claims the car gets 21 miles to the gallon, but AAA found it gets only 14.5. "That's a difference of 6.5 miles for every single gallon," Local 6 Problem Solver Wendy Saltzman said.

The Dodge Neon came in second with the EPA claiming the car gets 28 miles to the gallon, but AAA found the number was actually only 24.

And the popular Toyota Corolla also topped that list, with the EPA claiming the car gets 32 miles to the gallon. The AAA estimate is 28.9.

"In about 40 cases we tested, every one was less," Brannon said.

Did they test the RX-8?

looks like they were testing "real world mixed" driving against the "hiway milage"

If a newon does get close to or above 30, something is seriously wrong with the car. My intrepid got 28 mpg on the hiway.

Not only is it hideous but you get lousy mileage - definately a new "ultimate driving machine" :D

I just got 19.62 MPG, with a few accelerations in there.

Wow. Minus the slogan, that sounds like what a lot of people say about the 8.
