Why isn't a rear fog light available in US?

Drove through a pretty thick fog the other night and was thinking it would've been nice to have one. But seems like it's not even an option on most cars sold here. Why not? Is it because we don't have dense fog here very often?

I just installed the rear fog light Lebren makes. Pretty easy install and it looks great.

HockeyRX-8 01-27-2010 12:33 AM

I think it's because we in the US do not require one as standard vehicle equipment like in Europe and other parts of the world. I myself have a custom made one and I love it!

ZumnRx8 01-27-2010 01:09 AM

^hockey hit the Nail on the Head... LEBREN has a nice LED set up

rodjonathan 01-27-2010 01:21 AM

yup lebrens setup is pretty awesome gonna order one some day down the road ... and yeah the eu requires the rear fog thats why most german cars have em built into the tail lights

DarkAngel 01-27-2010 01:22 AM

DIY are awesome. I love creating and adding things on my cars using LED's. So simple.

NgoRX8 01-27-2010 01:36 AM

It's not required here so we missed out. I have it but it's not being used as a foglight. The Lebren light looks awesome, imo, and is the way to go for those who want a light down there.

ZumnRx8 01-27-2010 01:44 AM

^ i rather have the Kenstyle FOG though :) but you gotta buy the kit  ..... but yea.... LEBREN

NgoRX8 01-27-2010 02:07 AM

lol... the foglight didn't come with the bumper. I had to get it separately....

would've never bought it if i never found a steal of a deal. The entire assembly (fog+harness) costs over 200 bucks new...

ZumnRx8 01-27-2010 02:16 AM

^not bad for how sexy it is on that ass :yesnod:

Lebren FTW it's inexpensive and very nice quality. My pics are on another computer but here is a far away shot of mine you can see how bright it is...

lol, I agree, the 7440 bulb it comes with is blinding.

fray 01-27-2010 09:33 AM

I used the JDM fog light, harness and switch in my 2004. Works great. (And yes, I even left the original bulb in there.. I use it in heavy fog that occurs in the rural areas near my house.)

One thing (discussed in other posts back a few years back) is rear fog lights are allowed by federal law, but usage of the rear fog is regulated by the states. In Minnesota where I live, there is no direct regulation so it's dubious if it's even legal for me to use it in fog. So I follow the CA standard.. less then 200 feet visibility, I use the light.. otherwise I don't.

MICHGoBlue 01-27-2010 12:29 PM

I like the look of the rear fog light, but here in this country, with most of the population not even knowing the existence of rear fog light, if you ever get rear ended, I can see that as an excuse for the other insurance company to not pay up.

Pardon my ignorance if the lebrens setup comes on and off with the brake lights.

DarkLord7854 01-27-2010 01:35 PM

Series 2 don't have the triangle anus to put the fog light in.. Shame..

Razz1 01-27-2010 02:10 PM

I feel your pain Darklord

:crying:

It is on whenever your headlights are on. It is not another brake light.

New Yorker 01-27-2010 05:44 PM

I realize it's required in other countries. I think it oughta be required here, too. Seems every year there's some huge fog-caused interstate accident out west, with literally dozens of accidents and injuries. I mean, wouldn't a real bright rear fog help prevent those?

And hey, if you use it when it's not foggy – and it blinds someone, causing an accident? You're at fault. Simple.

CarAndDriver 01-27-2010 05:51 PM

Some European models come with the rear fog light. However, I do see a lot of Euro driving morons who just have the light on all the time. I am sure they don't even know they have it on nor what it's for.

fray 01-27-2010 07:41 PM

For the Series II folks, the rear bumper reflectors are the rear fogs in other countries. I'm not exactly sure how they're wired or setup w/ lights.. but my understanding is they are reflectors normally.. when ya flip the rear fog light on they get very bright.

BTW the lighting rules are either you have a 1 rear fog.. places somewhere between the center and drivers side.. or you can have two lights spaced on the bumper.. so that is why the reflectors are used as rear fogs...

(BTW if there is any question, the JDM rear fog light is the same as the Euro rear fog light.. had someone in the auto parts industry in Europe verify it for me.. AFAIK there is no difference in the light from RHD and LHD...)

(cough*cough*clears throat*)....Japanparts.com sells the JDM/EURO OEM rear Fog attachment lower piece for somewhere around $300 for the 09+ Series II RX8, paint matched straight from a JDM/EURO dealer. That piece cannot be ordered through a US dealer unless you have the VIN of the car itself from which the part is of (From experience for my nephews 09 CWP)
