When people warned me about autostart...

Okay, I was at the honda dealership looking at an Insight (yes, i am trying to trade my beloved rx8 in).

The test driver drove my car. When he left the car, he left it in first gear. No parking brake.

When I was leaving the office, and autostarted the car to leave the car smashed into the curb leaving the grey lip of the front bumper completely torn off as well as most of the front wheel well.

How do I go about repairing this?
How much should I expect for parts - im looking for the parts online without success.

I say that's a form of punishment from your rx8, for considering an insight lol

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing last night when I thought about how my rx8 does tend to act to.. mistreatment. Especially when the security system decided to go off by itself at the toyota dealership. -_-

I didn't even get mad at the guy I was just in a state of awe.

I just ziptied the top portion of the wheel well to a hook in the inside so it doesn't rub against the tire anymore.

DocBeech 03-25-2011 08:49 PM

its not a proper ghetto fix unless you add some duct tape.

RogueTadhg 03-26-2011 12:17 AM

so what is it that im looking at anyways? Thank you for finding the website.

Zipties was the only thing I could find at hand because I didn't want more wear on the tire.

Am Im looking for the "wheel house" in the picture? Im assuming the wheel house in the website linked above means "wheel well" or the black plastic covering protecting the components of the headlight and oil cooler.

Looks like everybody is using zipties to fix their car temporarily (for some, permanently) :lol2:

I shudder to think of the effect on my car if all the zip ties ceased to exist.

I'm sure you've heard this before, but it's best to have the E-brake up and be in gear when parked. Still sucks that it happened though. I like the idea of remote start but I'd be paranoid about something like that happening and I prefer to leave the car in gear. If there was a safe way to leave the car in gear and still have remote start, that would be cool, but it's just one of those things I've decided I can live without.

are you sure you had your remote start done legally?
usually in order for autostart to work you have to go through a procedure, or it wont autostart at all.

mine is
-put in neutral
-press brake
-pull up e-brake
-release brake
-press remote start button
-exit vehicle
-lock the car.

if the alarm is set off or the door is opened, the remote start will deactivate. [if someone were to get in the car and put it into gear]

The way that my car was setup is that I just need to press autostart. There was not a procedure (which I bragged about before). But yeah, given the circumstances I do think that the viper system of making sure that remote start - starts properly is the best way. ...Just in case of worse than this.

I guess it takes the one time to correct previous mistakes. So I guess it's Best Buy's fault. Where do you see that its illegal for the viper alarm system to be setup just with? (Actually I'll PM you at the same time.)

its not that hard to make it "hand brake required" to do activate remote start, all they need is tap it into the e-brake signal.

most shop will just do whatever it takes to get the job done ASAP, probably didn't do it.

if i understand that line correctly, your saying that viper doesnt have a safety procedure? <not true.

all Directed [Viper, Python, Clifford] alarm/remote start systems have a setting for manual and auto remote start vehicles. best buy should have known this, or they technically should be liable:doh: [considering they are "Authorized" installers]

if you look in the installation manual [not the user manual] there are different instructions and programing procedures for a manual and automatic transmissions.

for the past couple months i have been trying to get mine installed, but the shop couldn't get it working right till now. for about a week and a half they had my alarm set up to the automatic mode [which caused a whole bunch of problems.] so i went back last week to find out that they looked over what they programmed and it was on auto the whole time. [which would explain why it would start without having to do any safety procedure].

I'm not sure about the legality, but from my research, it is usually considered "illegal" having a remote start on a manual trans without a safety procedure, because it is really dangerous [like situations like this] in which the installer should be held liable for it.

It's called aerodynamic zip ties. Your car will gain 1 hp with it

SiLVeRE8 03-27-2011 05:51 AM

Auto start is illegal on all manual cars regardless of any kind of safety procedures that is comes with. I have it on my car (but was never given a receipt for this reason...). I don't even remember the last time I used remote start... Since I rarely drive my car. But all in all just be careful with it!!

If bestbuy installed it for you and you have the receipt to prove it then they should be liable for it.
