IRVINE, Calif., April 25, 2008 –

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today confirmed that its all-new MAZDA6 sports sedan will launch later this year, with an expected on-sale date in late summer, 2008. The highly anticipated 2009 MAZDA6 is the first of Mazda’s “Zoom-Zoom Evolution” second-generation vehicles, building on a heritage of sports sedans and sports cars that no other manufacturer can boast, and bringing a combination of sports sedan, sophistication, build quality and product insight not currently found in the market.

“This is the most important new vehicle Mazda has launched in a decade,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO, from Denver, where the car was unveiled to Mazda dealers a day earlier at the company’s North American Dealer Meeting. “The midsize sedan segment – where MAZDA6 competes – is a real battleground, with some of the best vehicles in the industry going toe-to-toe for sales. This new MAZDA6 was designed and engineered specifically for the North American market – the third Mazda in a row to be so – and will take on the very best cars from Asia, Europe and the U.S.”

Following on the heels of the CX-7 and CX-9 crossover SUVs, the 2009 MAZDA6 was designed and engineered for the needs, wants and desires of the North American customer. As it has been since the first MAZDA6 launched in 2002, all North American MAZDA6s will continue to be built at AutoAlliance International, in Flat Rock, Mich, a joint venture with partner Ford Motor Company.

The North American MAZDA6 differs from the similarly named car sold in the rest of the world in many ways: larger interior and exterior size, more powerful engines and unique styling. What it retains, however, is something that earned the first MAZDA6 more than 130 international awards and accolades: it delivers Zoom-Zoom, and in large doses.

Power for the 2009 MAZDA6 will be available from an all-new Mazda-designed and developed MZR 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a 3.7-liter V6 as used in the 2008 CX-9, Motor Trend’s 2008 Sport/Utility of the Year and the 2008 North American Truck of the Year. Transmission choices are a six-speed manual or five-speed Sport AT automatic with manual-shift mode (2.5-liter engine) or a six-speed Sport AT automatic with manual-shift mode (3.7-liter V6).

Suspension will be all-independent, with four-wheel disc brakes and standard ABS and dynamic stability control. As on every Mazda, balance, dynamics and on-road feel – coupled with unparalleled reductions in road noise and vibrations – will set the MAZDA6 apart from its competition.

The 2009 MAZDA6 will be available only as a four-door sedan, and in three trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, with varying levels of standard and optional equipment.

More information on the all-new 2009 MAZDA6 sports sedan will be available closer to launch, including specifics on engine output, trim levels, equipment and pricing.

Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., Mazda North American Operations oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico through nearly 900 dealers.Operations in Canada are managed byMazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario; in Mexico byMazdaMotor de Mexico in MexicoCity; and in Puerto Rico by Mazda de Puerto Rico in San Juan.

looks like a Maxima. the U.S. got screwed.

Huey52 04-25-2008 07:08 AM

Darn, another newer model that I would not now buy (the other being the '09 RX-8). My daughter's 2003 Mazda6 was/is perfect. Oh well, not the first manufacturer to go larger/heavier/gawdier in a model's later life.

XDEEDUBBX 04-25-2008 07:27 AM

sorta has rx8 front fenders..

brillo 04-25-2008 09:10 AM

The car is suppose to weigh about the same as the old model per Mazda. Remember the mazda2 got bigger and lost 150lbs.

I personally think this looks damn good. I like the euro version as well but this is the best looking mainstream sedan on the road in the us bar none.

lesper4 04-25-2008 09:19 AM

does look big and very nisssan like but i would like to see more shots, i think it still has promise.

playdoh43 04-25-2008 09:19 AM

the shape is very camry-ish,

stop crying about the weight, its what people want, most of us are not part of their target demographics. even the accord is a large sedan now, no longer mid size. They are just going with what sells

Huey52 04-25-2008 09:28 AM

Concur, and yet I was part of their demographic, but no longer will be thanks to this upsizing.

Euro version is definitely the best looking. I don't know how that sloping roof line will fare with the US market.

I found a couple more pics from the Autoblog website

grrr. people keep beating me to the post!!! i suppose thats what i get for sleeping in.

well at least i have good info on the sizing issues which give us one Mazda6 for the US and one for the rest of the world-

http://www.nwipp-newspapers.com/FH/f...3932388898.php

As the article states for Japan they needed to stay with the smaller size of the previosu platform for 2 reasons

1. because they have great amounts of Japanese customer feedback that say they need to stick with that size

2. The new D segment platform underpinning the Mondeo was so big it wouldn't fit in Japanese car parking structures AND its larger width would put it in a high Japanese tax bracket. It would completely shut them out of the home market.

So Japan manufactures on an update of the previous chassis for the home market Australia and Europe while the US gets the larger new Mondeo D segment platform.

Staying the same previous size makes no sense for here. It would be drastically undersized when compared to its direct competitors.

Every article would talk about how little leg room hip room etc it had.

and the biggest difference- We get to drop that 3.7 in there where they probably would have serious packaging issue s with the smaller platform.

oh and ive got 2 pics the Front

Well, it's not too bad...looks like it was designed by a committee that was terrified to take any risks.

Pretty sad, though, that they craft out all the wild and zany show cars then hork out a BlandMobile for the 6.

More pictures here.

I think it looks real nice. Like the back end more that the Euro version.

lesper4 04-25-2008 10:43 AM

i like the rear but the front grills of this and the new mazdas (rx-8) are just not doing it for me.

bruce_van 04-25-2008 11:35 AM

Am I the only one here who thinks it looks great? Come one folks. it's a sedan that is supposed to compete with the likes of Accord, Camry, Fusion.

In a beauty contest, this car wins hands down. Most of us here don't like big cars, but we're not the target demographic. We are the minority. For mainstream, people are always looking for bigger cars and I think Mazda engineers hit a homerun in designing a larger car that weighs less than the previous model.

The Drunk IT Guy 04-25-2008 12:16 PM

It's just meh... Nothing exiting or special about it.. But I suppose I'm not really the intended market for a car like this.

The only thing I like is the Mercedes rear end..

SideOfBacon 04-25-2008 12:35 PM

no sir, i dont like it.

restiller 04-25-2008 01:30 PM

i was disappointed until i saw the rear view.
just like the current 6's, it would probably look better with a spoiler.
i agree that it's a bit vanilla. the rear mini windows look very compromised.

off topic: caveney, your avatar...i don't know if should :lol2: or :puke: what is that thing?

lesper4 04-25-2008 02:17 PM

like your avatar restiller, cant wait for the movie.

And yes it does deffinitly look better then all of its competition for sure.

EXACTLY... you know who loved the looks of this car? My mom!!! yeah, that's right. We Rx-8 people may be ho-hum about the whole thing, but for people in the mainstream, to have them even consider this car along with the Accord, Camry and similar, and have my mom type in all caps about how sleek the Mazda6 looks, is a good thing.

For us... Mazda makes wankel cars and MazdaSpeed offerings.

but yeah, I am sad there's no 5 door variant. Maybe the next Mazda3 will fit me well.
