Uneven Tire Wear
 

This is for an Oldsmobile Alero that has wear on the inside tread on both the front and the rear. The owner of the vehicle told me that she was told it was because she didn't rotate the tires.

Because it is an Alero, I'm thinking the camber must be almost neutral and that there would not be cause for the inside treads to be worn while the rest of the tires are fine.

Uneven tire wear from my understanding should only come from: low tire pressure, camber adjustment, or bad alignment, correct? Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like a bad alignment. Too much toe-out. That will cause the inside of the tire to wear very quickly.

My weekend car has toe out of -3.5mm causing my fronts inner tire to wear about every 6000 miles. My backs have a toe in of 4mm so its most likely causing my rear tires to wear quickly on the outside (last about 8000 miles). With my car, these are factory settings.

What kind of tires are on the Alero? The Yokohamas A022 I use wear on the inside in general even with 0 toe and 0 camber because their internal bias pre-tensions them for turning. (side walls are extremely hard and the rest of the tire extremely soft (120 AA)).

I don't believe that lack of rotation would cause this problem. The wear would likely be on the outside in that case. On my daily driver, I don't rotate my tires and they are wearing evenly. I do check them often to make sure the alignment is within specs.

If the tire pressure is too low, then not only will the inside wear quickly but the outside will wear just as quickly too.

I would check the Edmunds forums under Alero owners. It could be a common problem from the factory.

The tires are 225/50 Goodyear Eagle LS, she's not sure of the speed rating but I'm guessing H's.

And I'll check with Edmunds to look further.
