normally id be able to spot an undercover cop a hundred yards away, but today i just saw someone pulled over by an undercover ford explorer! maybe ive been blind all along, but when did they start using suv's??? and what other types of undercover cars have you seen on the streets?
Do undercover cops have the authority and juristiction to pull you over for Traffic Violations? I thought they could only pull you over for other crimes.

A cop is a cop. Undercover cops don't usually mess with traffic citations, but they sure can if they so choose.

Also worthy of note: Any car can be made into a patrol car. The "non-standard" ones you sometimes see are usually cars that were siezed.

Ike, you'll appreciate this one: Colorado State Patrol has a WRX-STi as a marked patrol car, complete with a light bar and all.

Florida does that with their drug busts- you see a lot of performance cars siezed, painted and badged and used for shows, drug awareness programs, and occasionally by the FHP. That Miata above was donated to the FHP by a guy that collected Miatas and was just used for show.

I saw a blue minivan pull someone over on my trip down from NJ to FL a month ago. Don't recall what state it was. All the lights on the minivan were inside, so when they are off, you really couldn't tell it had lights.

Lets get a photoshop of an undercover 8, anyone wanna try that?

LOL - I10 corridor....you never want to get pulled over by an LA cop along that stretch of road. How do you think they've acquired their fleet of unmarked vehicles? 60 Minutes did an expose on the I10 corridor cops a few years ago...get caught speeding there and you may never make it out of the state.

Coolest unmarked I've seen was in Atlanta. I was cruising about 80 mph on I40? I think and noticed a greay colored vehicle coming up fast. When he passed it was an 85 or so Mustang 5.0 in LX form. Was painted in total gray primer except for a shield on the door. Coolest looking cop car I've ever seen...I bet he was doing 120 as he passed me like I was standing still.

Not true. Unless you consider BMWs built in Spartanburg, SC to be 'domestic'. I've seen people pulled over by SC cops in BMWs on I-85 in the vicinity of Greenville.

That would be Doraville, especially just outside the Perimeter on Peachtree Industrial and Buford Highway. Going southbound on Peachtree Industrial at night, about 1 exit before I-285, there's a curve with a *totally* unlighted black spot where that Impala, and the Camaro(s), and the Explorer, etc. like to hide with their light off. I believe that's illegal in GA - isn't it state law that police vehicles doing enforcement at night need to be visible for <1/4 mile?> in the approaching direction?

I was pulled over by a '98 green mustang(undercover) and a blue camaro SS(also undercover) on separate occasions. I have seen a black dodge durango cruising around with undercover cops in it.

That was orgiginally posted by me, it was used for a promotional poster for the CSP and was returned back to stock form after a couple weeks.

I'll believe when I see some proof. I'm not calling you a liar but our tax dollars are not going towards BMWs, people woud have a fit in this country if that were the case.

BLAH!

The CHP's here in South Cal also have the white Camaro's. I see them everyday on the 15 fwy. I think they're sometimes nicknamed "Interceptors"...

I recall when living in Illinois that the state police used a black Grand National for speeding on Illinois highways. All blacked out with hidden lights. Now I believe they use Mustangs.

You're right - Camaros and Mustangs are commmonly referred to as "Police Interceptor Vehicles." They are used for catching high performance cars and motorcycles. Most of the Crown Vics and Grand Marquis run out of steam around 110 MPH or so, while the Camaros etc are good up to almost 150 MPH.

Here's some interesting trivia for you all: the old Chevy Caprice's (nicknamed "Shamu the Cop Car" in police circles when painted in Black and White, lol) were kept on the road long after they were due to retire by many police departments because they were much faster than the Crown Vics, and they were good for up to 130 MPH or so. Those that had 'em often refused to give them up, and drove them until they practically fell apart.

Well here in chicago you see a whole lot of under cover, from mustangs to camaros, suburbans, i think the best though was when i had my mustang. This camaro pulled up next to me with blacked out windows and revcs his engine trying to get me to race, and i inched forward just a bit and low a behold guess what it was... yes a cop.. ****** tried to get me to take off so he could pull me over....so if your in the area out here watch out! AND my g/fs dad just got a ticket in indiana from a mustang, yes he didnt think it was a cop either, until he got nailed.

That would be the one I refer to. Many hurried braking exercises as a result of those guys.

And I am not sure about the law about being visible. I got pulled over by a State Trooper hiding in the trees in I-16, doing about 90 a couple years ago.

LOL you lot should count yourself lucky!!!

try this

Modded BMW M5 undercover (seen this thing keep pace with a 911), a modded Evo 8 FQ MR 340, Modded Subaru WRX PPP's and STi's and thats not to mention the starndard motorway partol cars that pack around 250bhp - 300bhp!!!!

If they want to catch you they will!

all of these are local i dont live in a city, the crime is low near me, the police station shuts about 9pm in my lil town with the larger one being about 15 miles away, just the police like there cars!

sadly there are speed cameras every where so dont see many good chases!

If you got stopped for racing with him it would have been very close to entrapment. If you went to trial you would probably lose, but I think most prosocuters would be nervous about the situations and cut you a good deal.

I'm pretty sure you don't need to stop. If an unercover cop attempts to pull you over, I think you can keep going. Just make it clear that your not running by proceeding slowly. They generally advise that you proceed to the nearest police station. If you don't know where that is, drive to an area with a lot of people around and then stop. If you got a cell, you can call 911, and ask them to send a patrol car. I think most undercover cops understand why people are nervous about being stopped, so I don't think they would get pissed.

Sorry, but the Washington State Patrol routinely uses an unmarked Volvo S80 for traffic stops on I-90 east of Seattle. Can't "prove" it to your satisfaction since I hesitate to pull over and take a photo, feeling the WSP might object , but I can assure you it's common around here.

Here in Houston Tahoes, Expeditions, Cherokees, Crown Vics, Caprices, Newer Impalas, and Camaros are the standard fare; in Galveston County I have seen Mustang GTs. My last ticket was from a Tahoe.
