The trouble with being a car guy (or girl).......

... is that is it hard to keep one car or one idea as 'first place' or the best.
Example: driving to work today i first stopped for gas, and next to me was a brand new aston martin vanquish. Steel gray, incredibly low to the ground, flawless interior, brand new tags, and an exhaust tone that you'd kill for. So the problem arose on the way to work afterwards... "Man, i really want that car."

I say that to myself maybe 2-3 times a week. I'll see a car on the road, or on tv, or in a magazine, and suddenly I really want that car. Screw the vette i saw last week, or screw the S15 silvia i saw in that magazine, i was wrong cuz thats the car for me.

Same effect for parts for my 8. I'll have my next mod set in stone, plan for it finiancally, then read a thread on something else, or see a youtube vid of something different. It's never really a plan, it's more of how I feel at the time. The picture i have for my car now is completely different from what I had a couple months ago.

Anyone else suffer from this....? :dunno:

Clavius 02-07-2007 05:56 PM

Yup. Trust me your not alone in that. I'll see a 'vette or one of the two Elise's around my town and say "Man I want one of those." , problem is no $$ to buy 'em. I swear I wish I was Jay Leno guy see's a car and just buys it, or says screw it and builds it himself.

That and after buying a part for my baby, I find myself saying "thats it for now." but the following week I'm looking at the F/S section or some website saying "Hmm.. if I stay in this weekend I could....". Its well the nature of the beast I guess. We are Car People, others love stock but some like us we can't leave 'em alone.

One of these days I will have a garage like Jay Lenos so I can buy every car I say I want. Well, I guess I'll need money to...

Plus you gotta luv his wife for allowing him to buy 'em all. His garage is more like a warehouse and best part is he drive's mostly all of them atleast once a year I heard. That and he has a few mechanics that work at the garage full time. Now that is a car guy! Oh and he's the self proclaimed "President of more money than brains club."

dillsrotary 02-07-2007 06:55 PM

if i had the money available to purchase whatever i wanted at that moment i might kick myself weekly. I'd buy say a land rover and mod it, then something else, then something, then be stuck with a bunch of cars that were just impulse buys. I bet this is what seinfield is feeling.

apc_monk 02-07-2007 08:48 PM

Or there are some that are so in love with cars they will most likely never have..... but I seem to love the 8 and I am going to work damn hard at getting one. Going to go do homework now. ... :ylsuper:

Easy_E1 02-07-2007 09:05 PM

I agree with ya ,but to a certain extent. I want that Vanquish you saw at the service station. I have only wanted one for the past ,how long have they been out 4+ years. The wife say's she'll buy me one, when she wins the Lotto! Nice. There are lots of choices out there and it doesn't help, but I set my mind on one thing and I will work for it till I have it ,or die trying. Probably the latter.

dillsrotary 02-07-2007 09:11 PM

see thats how i differ, it doesn't matter if it was a vanquish or not. if it was a new 911, perfect black exterior, then i would have create this thread about that porsche.

Welcome to being a car enthusiast.

Just be glad you live in an era with so many cars to choose from!

went to vistit an aquaintance of mine recently - I knew he had a few nice cars but when I pulled into his driveway I was not sure I had the right house . When I got around the back I had a chuckle to myself "I tink I've found it" ....... sitting on his lawn :
Ferrari F360
Porche 911 turbo
Astin Martin Vanquish
Lamboughini Gallardo
Hummer
& for a runabout an STI Subaru
There were several others but they sort of faded into the background.

My eyes practically fell out of their sockets . Later I learned they were all on Hire Purchase & when he got into financial difficulty - guess what had to go ........

Yeah, How does the Rolling Stones go... "You can't always get what you want"

But, Yeah...arn't 'wheels' the greatest thing....and its great to dream...like winning lotto!

Ha ha - knew somone wouldn't believe me .
He is a property investor (like me) . He was about to launch his book on how many million he had made & was going to use the cars on the cover when the shit hit the fan . Suffice it to say the book never came out.
At the time I thought he owned them all outright - not too surprising when you are in property .....

The mazdaspeed 8 was a joke - this is not .

Design1stCode2nd 02-08-2007 11:56 AM

I'm the same way. No sooner do I get my RX8 then I'm looking for what my next car will be while lining up mods.

Aipex8 02-08-2007 12:22 PM

I've managed to control my lust for other cars by collecting higher end 1:18 diecast cars. Yeah, I've got a Carrera GT, a Ford GT, DB9, etc.

rx8wannahave 02-08-2007 12:36 PM

dillsrotary, I think we ALL have this problem.

You know, I love my RX8 and it's been nothing but good to me and I'm glad I got her back in December 2004 (05 base 6spd). She has a narrow opening truck but while deceptive it can hold a bunch of stuff like my son's mini stroller AND the weeks worth of groceries. Meanwhile, it’s comfortable and my son (only 1) loves it back there…you should hear him sing/talk all the way to grandma’s who takes care of him during the day. So…I’m still all smiles and in stupid love with my 8.

YET…I also am having a love affair with the Audi A4 (past generation and current), the next Camaro, and now the G8 (you can watch me become a fan boy of the G8 in the other thread, lol).

Meanwhile, I also really like the GTO, G35, and still considering a look at the next Evo.

So, this automotive whoredom is a common ailment that us car guys/gals have. We say…

“Now this is all I ever wanted, this will be my last car…I’ll keep it forever”

…then, BAM there comes a new car looking all sexy and hot, winking at ya like only you and the car are the only ones in the world (we are still talking about cars right…???, LOL) and then we go run the numbers to see how and what we need to do to get our hands on one.

LOL, it’s a drug…chasing “WANT” is a dangerous game, and foolish, but most of us after looking at the numbers come back down from cloud 9. OR…our wives slap us into reality.

SO, trust me…us, we GET this problem of yours. :)

Allow me to attempt to psychoanalyze this condition…I think this has more to do with flaws in the human condition, rather than being “enthusiasts”. It is an insatiability that is more rampant in strong capitalist societies or cultures more absorbed by consumerism…never being happy with what you have. Our youth today especially suffers from this condition. At least 5 of the deadly sins – pride, envy, gluttony, lust, greed – are represented in this condition. Even those who seemingly have everything, are often still not satisfied.

First, understand what REALLY drives or motivates you, then you’ll better understand this condition.

..that’ll be $525. ;)

A lot of truth here mate...
I does all depend on your wealth....but the older one gets in life the more your priorities change...i.e...I can better spend my money on more important matters/family.
Cars are fantastic...but they are in the end just transport and hungry for your cash....you very rarely come out in front...owning them.....

m477 02-08-2007 06:02 PM

Just think of all the money it would take to change cars - any car < 5 years old you will take a sizable depreciation hit, the new car will cost thousands more, you'll have to pay a crapload of tax, registration fees, etc. Really we could easily be talking $10k+ just to change cars. Now think of everything else you could do with that money, or how much it could grow to after a few years of compound interest.

therm8 02-08-2007 06:36 PM

My car's almost paid off, so I feel where you're coming from. Lately I've been eyeballing a Factory Five Cobra kit. You can get in one under $20k if you don't mind building your own car, and can do some of the work yourself. But man, a badass, old school roadster, with the hp to weight ratio of an Enzo...you've gotta drool a little over that.
