I'm glad they didn't use the s55. The s55 is the worst sounding inline 6 I've ever heard. Awful sounding engine. Makes the regular m2 better over the m2 competition IMHO.

@Loki well good for you! The M2 is a sweet car. Although I'm not sure trade in value for the rx8 will amount to much. For me the Cayman or a z4m coupe would I let my 8 go.

@hornbm nothing that an Akrapovic can't solve. :)
My neighbor has an M2 non-comp. However he has the m carbon fiber exhaust and it sounds good. I just love the turbo overrun noises.

So am I the only a-hole here who just wants a used 'Vette in the future and NOT have to worry about reliability, especially electronic crap?

BMW cars always give me the impression that they are about as reliable as 8s, but much harder to work on because of German engineering and crap tons of electronics to control even the simplest circuits. Yep, definitely need a computer for the map light circuits.

If I ever decide to touch a German car, it will be a lease. The next sucker can deal with all of that stuff.

This is part of the reason why Zupr4 gets a lot of crap as well. Toyota and BMW are pretty much the opposite on the reliability spectrum, so people are doubting if this thing is gonna be reliable.

Maybe Toyota couldn't afford the M2/3/4 S55 engine. :) The b58 while not as sexy as the s55 engine it's still a solid performance block used across most BMW lines since 2016/17. Power tuning on the b58 is fairly good albeit fairly expensive. It's BMW after all.....

Don't follow this joint venture product much looks like it's not a whole lot different than the Fiata venture. Although the fiat did fit their own engine. I don't know if Toyota has a performance engine available for the supra. Hey at least it's still an inline 6!
I note that the z4 has more power?
Wheel gaps with the Supra is horrible.
Busy design which seems to be the carrying card for sporty Japanese cars these days. Ugh. They should get some inspiration from Mazda.
Interior is straight up BMW down to the bloody chime!

While both will have distinct driving characteristics, the Z4 is more BMW than the Supra is to Toyota.
Stock for stock I bet the M2 competition will eat the supra at Portimao.

The Z4 is supposed to be starting at US$15k more as well.

A Corvette is a wise choice. It wasn't for me at this stage because I needed 3+ seats. Once that's not needed anymore a C5 onward will be in my stable.

I honestly believe there isn't a single exhaust that can make the S55 sound good. To date haven't heard one that fixes it, just different tones of shittyness. The non-comp is the n55 which sounds leaps and bounds better. I have no idea why the s55 sounds so bad honestly. It perplexes me.

For performance they are more concerned about, you know, actually going fast.

How good it sounds? Who cares if it wins races?

NotAPreppie 02-17-2019 02:04 PM

The 99% of the population that couldn't tell you where the nearest race track is will care more about sound than actual performance.

UnknownJinX 02-17-2019 02:22 PM

Then don't buy an M with S55. Simple.

Yeah I know some people buy it for the status but remember that the car is still supposed to be performance-oriented. Live with it if you don't like it.

Oh well, not my problem since I am not touching a Bimmer, and my rental experience with a Vette tells me it sounds very good.

NotAPreppie 02-17-2019 09:06 PM

I have no opinion on the sound of an engine I'm likely to never own.
