Test drove an e46 m3... mistake!!!

I love my car and had given up on modifications due to having a kid and the monetary issues that come with it until: I test drove that damn m3... Came sssoooo close to buying it. Finally sanity (and my wife) prevailed but the upshot of it is that iv gotten off my ass and started some basic mods. Still that m3 left me feeling tingly inside and I can't stop looking at the BMW forums. *sigh*

As you may know, it will be hard to get the same feel out of an RX-8 if the M3 is really what you enjoyed. Was it the power that appealed to you? Both the M3 and RX-8 are fun cars.

I'm sure the feeling will fade a bit and you'll continue to be happy with your RX-8. I did one of those track events in Vegas and drove a F-430 Scuderia. It definitely made other cars seem boring in comparison for a little bit. Then again, maybe it was easier to get over since I really don't have the means to own something like that any time soon!

I've test driven one as well

felt slightly faster, but nowhere near as stable

M3 is a nice car until the warranty runs out.

That is it is a nice car if you don't take passengers.

Would swap my for an E30 M3 any day of the week

StealthTL 12-22-2012 01:46 AM

You've always struck me as a bit of a BMW driver.......

I have been lusting after E30 M3's for years. Those and E28 M5's My RX8 was supposed to be a E28 M5, I decided to buy something new instead that I could have a extended warranty on.

E46 M3's are nice if you want a heavy car that is kind of vague compared to the RX8. There is no denying the power is there, I was actually shopping for one of those as well, it was a toss up between a E46 and E30, I am not fond of the E36 M3's at all. Be warned, parts for an E46 M3 are very expensive and many parts are car specific so they have you where they want you.

My good friend purchased a fantastic E30 M3 back in April, I drove him up to Atlanta to pick it up in my RX7.

Then we continued to the tail of the Dragon and other fun roads after meeting some car friends.

His M3 is bored out and stroked, it makes 212 to the wheels now, when it was 200 crank HP stock. Fun fun car!

Over 50 cars have been beat by something else on the top gear track, what's your point?

You are quickly making a nuisance of yourself, I wonder how long you will last here

He has a very well sorted air cooled 911 too, he had the wife upgrade that weekend so he took the more civilized car.

Plus, that is a JCW Mini, it keeps up just fine.

Ozimandious 12-24-2012 10:57 AM

*wipes drool from chin* ... Yeah barring the mini I would LOVE to have any of those cars!!! My fav BMW would be the z3 m coupe IE the flying shoe!!! But an e30 or a later model air cooled 911 would also be awesome. I have to have back seat (21 month old daughter) and I Iv always liked the m3 with the gills... And I admit I'm a sucker for the sport button. GOD I loved the sound of it when floored in second or third. Yes the shifter sucked and it was vague compared to the 8 but the power and the sound made me tingly in a naughty way!!

Jim5546 is that a rossion q1 I see in his driveway!?!?! Or a noble? My hundred thousand dollar dream car.

Darkness8 12-24-2012 11:41 AM

funny, just saw a new M3 in a purple I had never seen before and it must have been his buddy following him in an alpine white with the oxblood interior(my fav combo). I thought to myself, I can afford one. then I counted how many bimmers i saw on the way home and realized I had not seen one rotary. I never get sick off people asking me what kind of car is that when they see my8. keep the rotary seen alive fellas we are special in our own way (short yellow bus special maybe)

Most of the cars in that driveway above are from the Charlotte area.

Every M3 car has been pretty amazing and the E46 is no slouch...
Unfortunately for me, I have a bit of an E92 fixation...

It's hard to beat the complete package of the older M3's rather it be an e36 or e46. Can't say the same about the new ones when it comes to price/package.

You may see that again with the M2. The F80 M3 and F82 M4 will definitely be more expensive than the previous gen and at 76k MSRP fully loaded, the E92 is already in the range of too expensive. I expect the F80 to be around the same price as a loaded E92 today and the F82 will push over 80.

The E36 and E46 were real bargains for their time (I'd even believe that's true w/inflation).

I have a 2008 E90 M3. Its my clear weather daily driver...Its CPO and has the extended mainence program, so if anything goes bad, its $50...fluids, brakes, clutch are all free for me to 100k. I just kicked over 60k.

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...41774315_n.jpg

I still have the 8, but it is garaged currently back in Michigan. I did't want to deal with the turbo issue / tuning while on a work assignment in Boston for 6 months...but the M3 is here!!! Waiting for the weather to break.

Ozimandious 01-15-2013 07:37 PM

I'm not excited by the e90/92 m3's personally... they are just getting too big and heavy!!! If I was to choose a modern BMW I would go with the 135M and some Dinan software. (if I could afford it that is)

If you're talking about the M135i hatchback, we don't get it here in the US.
It has a curb weight of 3150 lb which isn't bad.
The 1M coupe (which you can't buy new because they all sold out) has a curb weight of 3296.
The M3 w/the competition package is: 3557 lbs
So yea, it's heavier, but it's not bad by comparison.
Now then.. you want to talk about a pig..
The F10 M5 is 4300 lb.

So again.. wait for the M2 (2015 most likely). It's the replacement for the 1M. It'll likely weigh around the same as the 1M if not be a little lighter due to more extensive use of carbon fiber.
