Subaru BRZ Sports Coupe announced. Concept debuts at Frankfurt Auto Show

Details via FT86club

One piece of info our community has long been awaiting has just been announced.

Subaru has issued a press release [full transcript inside] announcing the Subaru BRZ name for its concept version of the rear-drive sports coupe that it is co-developing with Toyota.

While Toyota has already shown three concept versions of the FT-86 and Scion FR-S, Subaru has so far only shown a skeletal/powertrain/drivetrain concept (the Boxer Sports Car Architecture Concept). That should change as Subaru will be revealing its BRZ “technology concept” car at next month’s Frankfurt IAA auto show.

See INSIDE for more details and link to the Subaru BRZ teaser site.
I hope the BRZ gets some better styling than the conventional Subaru styling.

So they're making a Toyota FT-86, Scion FR-S, and Subaru BR-Z?

The Scion FR-S looks sexy... not gonna lie...
300bhp, RWD, Lexus LFA styling.

SayNoToPistons 08-23-2011 03:33 AM

Though Toyota developed three different FT-86/FR-S concepts, I believe there will only be one Toyota variant. Obviously this has been a joint venture between Subaru and Toyota, so Subaru will have their own version also.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Scion FR-S will be the US version of the Toyota FT-86. Same car, different names. If Toyota is planning 2 separate cars on this platform, that's new to me.

Very interested to see more on the Subaru. Generally speaking, I like Subaru a bit more so I've been interested to see where they go with this project.

Edit: ^I guess I missed that post or something. SNTP said exactly what I was saying/clarifying.

Might be due to econ restrictions for the two markets.

I don't see subaru's take on the design. It does look like something that would be best suited as a Scion ?? though.

I wouldn't put it past Toyota to put a turbo in this car though. Maybe to appeal to a more mature market.

Ugh, if the BRZ isn't turbocharged or atleast have an STI version i will be sad :(

RogueTadhg 08-23-2011 09:21 AM

I'll be surprised if it isn't, ImportImage.

I'm not sure about the toyota/scion version though

No turbo?! Why the hood scoop still there?

I don't see a hood scoop in pictures of either the Scion or Subaru versions. What picture are you looking at?

serothis 08-28-2011 12:57 PM

well the subie brz is supposed to make its official debut at frankfurt in a couple of weeks.

the only "concept" of the subie version i've seen was this see-through showing only the power train. Obviously the official body styling won't be a giant pill. :D

I feel like they started losing the battle with Mitsubishi and so now they're going to try and appeal to the lighter, better gas millage, n/a cars. I think its a good idea. If you can' t do better than the STi as a company then change directions to survive and celebrate your "legends".

Speed_8 08-28-2011 09:49 PM

pfff they will get riced out before we know it. chances are subaru will not even make it all wheel drive, since toyotas version won't be. do we know if its rear wheel drive at all??

If the chassis is right this might very well become the next rx8. Great handling and little power.
I didn't follow this model much, are there any suspension type announcements etc out there?

Flashwing 08-29-2011 04:12 AM

So rumor has it that the American division of Subaru has been saying they will refuse to sell a RWD vehicle in their lineup since Subaru only sells AWD vehicles.

Anyone see anything like that?

8 Maniac 08-29-2011 05:31 AM

That can't be a true or accurate rumor... from what is available so far, you can only expect this car would sell well and it would be too much to give up just to say all of your cars are AWD. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like a stupid move.

Nah, Mitsubishi isn't even close to a competitor right now against Subie. The WRX/STi is selling incredibly well with the GRB chassis. The Evo X sells very poorly and Mitsu has basically given up on performance vehicles altogether. I think the inexpensive RWD car is a niche that -some- Japanese company can fill, as the Silvia is long gone, and the 370Z is too expensive for entry level enthusiasts who want a lightweight RWD platform. It makes perfect sense for Scion to fill that niche as it is the most purchased brand by the younger generation. If the Scion version has a price point a few thousand above the tC but significantly below the 370Z it should sell like hotcakes.

Well the Scion Tc did sell like hotcakes if I recall, hell there's a blue tc that parks beside me at my apartments...

Yeah, Scion does well for itself, lots of good targeted marketing + reasonable price etc. They don't have any cars in their lineup for performance enthusiasts though as the sportiest car under the Scion brand is the tC which is a pretty anemic FWD car. Ironically the 4-cyl in the tC is pretty nice and can handle a bolt-on turbo kit quite easily, but FWD kills it.
