speaking of '06 WRX dynos...

Off the showroom floor, the numbers the '06 Evo IX puts down are comparable to the '05 Evo VIII. The crazy thing is how much power can be squeezed out of the IX with just a simple EcuTek tune and an MBC. Mistubishi's version of variable valve timing, called MIVEC, has significantly increased peak torque and lowered the RPM at which boost comes on. On a stingy Mustand dyno this '06 Evo MR IX put down an amazing 277whp and 297wtq! Very impressive. We're talking about gains of 50whp+ and 60wtq+ on the stock exhaust and paper air filter. :Drooling_

That's crazy, very nice car. So with the chip, the car is pretty close to C6 speed, if not slightly faster. Nice. :boink:

How long will a motor running 19+ psi boost last? I love the car, but how long do they last?
|
not bad for a 2.0l........btw pardon my ignorance but do these cars come with forged internals and cryo treated trannies? I'm just shocked that these powertrains can handle that much power. Sweet nonetheless.
|
The 4G63 engine itself is pretty robust...forged internals, closed deck, etc. On the stock bottom end guys are pushing 400+whp. The weak link is definately the drivetrain...syncros, clutch, etc...but that stuff doesn't usually start failing until you've added lots of power or beat the car up with a bunch of 6k RPM launches at the track.
I admittedly don't understand much about the engineering specifics of variable valve timing, so I'm curious to see if the new MIVEC heads become another variable that may experience mechanical failure as power is bumped up. Putting those heads on an already pretty reliable engine could be seen as testing the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" theory, but initial power numbers are pretty impressive. |

I ran around 20 psi in my DSM for 110k miles (2 turbos in that amount of time), it ended up getting totaled from someone running a redlight or else I may still have it. The Evo engine is certainly stronger and better than the 4G63 I had in my 1g.
In fact I'll take a 4G63 running 20psi over the renesis in the longevity department. Simply because the 4g63 is proven and the Renesis has had its fair share of early failures. |

Renesis engine failures are within specs for any new engine.

Keep telling yourself that, maybe eventually you'll believe it. |

oh, and thats not even a new engine. lol, haven't they been using that engine for some years now?

Regardless, nice numbers for the chip. Put that drivetrain in a decent looking car and I might consider one :boring: |
There's something beautiful about any car with that kind of tuning potential IMHO.

evo and sti look mean in their own way. look is subjective i personally think they look nice in an aggressive way. to each his own... While i personally do like the look of the rx8, one of the best looking cars out there... not everyone thinks the rx8 is drop dead gorgeus either. remember this poll by JD Power?
http://wardsauto.com/ar/auto_video_g...ence/index.htm im very impressed by the evo9, its going to be a nother great bout between the new sti and the evo 9. |
I like the front on the Evo in Steiner's sig better than the current JDm Evo IX front. The minor changes just ruined it.

I don't know about you guys, but the Evo X has me excited:
http://www.autoweek.com/article.cms?articleId=103378 I thought about getting the Evo or the STi a bit, but I don't care how good she cooks...I'm not ready for an ugly wife! The handling/looks/interior of the RX-8 won me over. Plus, it's cool explaining the engine to everyone. However, if the current Evo looked as good as the Evo X should, I would have much more strongly considered it. ~ Matt |

I doubt anyone here really knows the hard data at this point.... |

How do we digress in General Automotive regarding the capabilities of Evo's to debating Renesis reliability? It had nothing to do with the topic.
As for the Evo, I saw in Speed where they were comparing the compressor sizes between the 8 and 9, as they commented the 9's is larger but they still managed to reduce lag. Mitsu just keeps getting better and better with that platform. |
I think I'd prefer the IX over the X. I really don't love the way either model looks, but the IX looks the way an EVO should look IMO. The X looks more like a merging of Honda, Volvo and Audi styling cues. I have a feeling that despite the 300+ expected HP, it's going to be even heavier too, and probably a bit more expensive to boot.

I expect a very large performance boost going from 9-10. I like the new look too... however does anyone know if Evo X is taking the same path as the nissan GT-R, in that its becoming its own platform and no longer based on the Lancer? Otherwise is the new prototype (which according to autoweek is almost the finalized look of the Evo X) an indication of what the next generation Lancer would look like?

I'm excited about the Evo X too. The new Lancer should look less boxy as performance will do doubt be improved as it's easier to smog high horsepower turbocharged cars with variable valve timing (MIVEC). |
thanks steiner,
hmm if the new lancer is going to look like that, im not sure if its going to sell well. its a rather radical looking design, good for a sports car, but it alienates a lot of demographics at the same time for the regular lancer. |
I wonder how close to that concept it will be. I can just tell from the pics of the frontend that it most likely couldn't pass North American frontal crash tests. I think those prototypes are designed more to get people talking...especially if the real release is a couple years away. I remember when Chrysler debuted the PT Cruiser prototype a few years back. Not only did it look pretty mean, but it had RWD, a hemi V8, etc, etc. When it finally was released it combined the great handling of a minivan with all the power of a base model Neon...and it looked sorta stupid IMHO.
