One year after claiming a one-two victory in the 2.0-liter turbo class at the 24-Hour Race on the Nürburgring, Volkswagen has announced plans to return with two new natural gas-powered Scirocco racers.

Power will be provided by a 2.0-liter turbocharged CNG engine which produces about 300 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. Based on the traditional 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine, the CNG version features several modifications to ensure that it fully utilizes the high-octane natural gas for maximum performance. While Volkswagen doesn't want to tip off fellow competitors by releasing performance figures, they did say that the new engine reduces CO2 emissions by 25 percent compared to conventional engines.

The Scirocco GT24-CNG racers will be driven by a host of professional drivers including Peter Terting, Thomas Klenke, former DTM driver Vanina Ickx, and two-time winner of the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, Klaus Niedzwiedz.

Volkswagen will also field three 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol-powered Scirocco GT24 racers in an attempt to improve upon last year's already stellar success.

pdxhak 04-18-2009 04:23 PM

kersh4w 04-18-2009 07:15 PM

thats hot.

DailyDriver2k5 04-23-2009 06:23 AM

Thats a hot VW! Wish she was coming to our shores!

alnielsen 04-23-2009 08:07 AM

Yup, heard it's not coming to North America.

Spin9k 04-23-2009 08:30 AM

VW is so lame.... they're getting to act like Toyota over here...if it doesn't express 'family values' ... the US doesn't get it ...no fun at all.

...what was the excuse .... they don't want to eat into R32 sales I think? meh :icon_no2:

dillsrotary 04-23-2009 09:18 AM

I dont' think they want to eat up the GTI sales, face it if shopping for a GTI or scirocco you'd choose the better looking scirocco

Spin9k 04-23-2009 09:49 AM

What they don't understand is the only VW I'd ever consider (and perhaps many other peps as well) WOULD be the Scirocco ... otherwise I'm put off with all German brands. Great Engineering, bad parts & reliability.

....I should talk...owning an RX-8...that's seen more hospital time in 6 yrs than I have in 60 :icon_no2:

Atilla 04-23-2009 09:57 AM

wow...that's hot...

DailyDriver2k5 04-23-2009 10:25 AM

The GTI and Scirocco could co-exist. Like it was mentioned, the Scirocco would carve a chunk out of the GTI sales. They existed back in the '80s together , people who loved the GTi's still brought them and those who wanted a sports coupe went after the Scirocco.

I wish VW would move forward and give us a new rendition of the Corrado and at least have it sell here in the U.S ,and have the Scirocco sell in Europe.

Japan8 04-23-2009 10:57 AM

The MkVI GTI carries some styling cues from the Scirocco... and while I like the curretn MkV, the MkVI is much hotter.

There will be no MkVI R32. It's dead. Instead will be a GTI-R/R20T (name undecided) which will be AWD + 260-300hp. Basically an Audi TTS or TTRS in GTI clothes. (and at much lower price). MT and DSG are rumored to be available this time.

pdxhak 04-23-2009 11:01 AM

Is this a new decision to not bring the Scriocco to the US? Last I heard it was a go. Just no awd version.

That is funny and tragic at the same time. I'm having the same experience.
Hospital stays:
alnielsen: 17 days
RX8: about 100 days (excluding accident damage)

Last word from VW is no-go. Same reason- would cannibalize GTI sales. :icon_no2:

Like marriage is between a man and a woman?

Gee... i wonder if I'm going to get banned for saying that.

kersh4w 04-23-2009 07:42 PM

lets not confuse religious marriage and legal marriage between two consenting adults. there are far more marriages that i oppose that are male/female (in 3rd world countries) than male/male marriages... anyway....

it is really too bad they are not bringing it to north america. it is the on vw i'd buy. or a new corrado.
