smoking and backfiring
ok i just put a turbo in my r8 about 3 weeks ago.... ive had it tuned right the only thing is i haven't put a new fuel pump and fuel injectors in yet. im wondering if that would cause grey smoke and back firing or what would cause that. how can i fix the backfiring and the smoke. when it smokes it only smokes just a little bit and it when you crank it up and it backfires everytime you let off the gas. sometimes its loud and sometimes it doesnt backfire at all. help me please i need ideas
who tuned your turbo?
what kind of turbo? what piggyback are you using; int-x, e-manage? do you know what your AFR's are at? |
Tuning :) Who tuned it...what engine management.....
A bit rich is much better than too lean.... |
its a place in tacoma washington and my ecu is a greddy emanage piggy back ultimate and wat are afrs?
but wat about the smoke some of my freinds are saying that it smokes when i drive it sometimes just a little bit and the back firing wont that burn my apex seals up?
its a greddy t618z turbo kit
AFR = Air Fuel Ratio.
im not exactly sure right now cuz im still in the tuning process becuz i haven't put in my fuel pump and my injectors so right now its just tuned on my stock parts and their maxed out
what PSI?
the Greddy kit shouldn't be maxxing out your stock parts. The fuel pump and injectors should be able to handle it. (fuel pump definitely, injectors you can choose to swap as many people do) |
the smoke is most likely because you're running really rich. (too much fuel)
I'd go back to the tuner with your issues and have him work on your fuel maps a bit. |
8.7 psi is the max but for some reason my boost is all over the place from 3-8000 but it ranges and thats the max
shit if you could see the maps you would understand cuz right now im running about 12 and if im not mistaken thats perfect right? and the guys who did the dyno tuning they said they couldn't push my injectors anymore cuz they were maxed
Boost controller?
12psi in a Greddy kit is likely asking for it...... Stick to about 8PSI ........the Turbo can't handle much more than that anyway |
no 12 psi on the injectors 8.7 max on the turbo but my boost is all over the place from 2cd gear on up to 5th gear and they told me not to push my car past 4th gear past 7 grand becuz i risk detonation since my injectors are already maxed
the greddy doesn't boost very well over 7.5k rpm
ya ive noticed that i only get power from 5 to 7 so wat do you guys recommend i do have my boost adjusted?
tuning.
do you have a boos controller? |
nope but i thought they can do something with the turbo or do i have to get a boost controller?
Here are a few threads with LOTS of great info:
Definitive Greddy Turbo Fixes Emanage works but there are much better options out there such as the AccessPort. (it's not a piggyback, it completely reflashes your OEM pcm) Here is a thread on the emanage in case you stick with it https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-major-horsepower-upgrades-93/e-manage-ultimate-success-93286/ |
awesome man thanks

Me thinks a bit of reading is due...so you don't have a ton of problems. Get a boost controller..it will even things out and make it more drivable. |
yo should i go with a maual or a electronic boost controller?
my preference is an electronic one.....
Turn down your boost. Get rid of the piggy back. Buy an Access Port to control the A/F, timing ect..
josh: keep us posted on how this goes. Good luck
