Seen a few Solsti lately

Ive seen 3 Solstice here in the DC metro area over as many weeks.

Ive seen it in person multiple times, and even sat in the car, but must admit, it looks even cooler in motion. I was very impressed. My impressions of the car have continued to grow everytime i see one. Can't wait for the GXP version.

Has anyone else started seeing them on the road?

Feras 03-07-2006 02:29 PM

havent seen any yet...dunno why...btw it would be solstices, the singular isn't solstus.

RENESIS_NEENJA 03-07-2006 02:36 PM

I actually saw one the yesterday, it was the second time I've seen one, first time was a while back... like the first day they were put on the lots.

rx8wannahave 03-07-2006 02:37 PM

Yeah, I feel the same...that little car is pretty nice looking and with the 260HP GXP version it will also be a solid performer.

Nice job Mr. Lutz and GM!

I was behind a black one on the way home from work yesterday around 7:30pm. It looks pretty mean in low light conditions. I was squinting at the badge to make sure it wasn't a viper.

I seen a black one today. Nice looking ride, but I still wouldn't buy one.

Glyphon 03-10-2006 02:57 PM

i see a dark grey one everyday (there's one in my work parking lot). other than that, i've seen a red one and a silver one. they are pretty nice, but i like the styling of the sky better.

Not bad looking but according to auto testers the car lacks refinement and chassis/suspension tuning (compared to the new MX-5) as it was rushed to market by Bob Lutz.

I've see 3 or 4 here and they are definately good looking cars. I hope the handling and buid quality is sorted out by the time the Saturn/Opel versions are released.

Started to see a few here on the road in MD and there is one frequently parked in a lot adjacent to my building. Looks very tight. I'm sure a few aftermarket parts like sway bars would go a long way to improving the car. Too bad I can't use a two seater for another 20 years, 3yr old and 3 month old kids.

I've seen 2-3 around. They are selling like crazy so i'm not sure why I haven't see more yet. Much better looking car in person but the Sky has it beat in the looks department IMO.

I've yet to see a comparison where the MX5 beats it all around BTW. Not to mention it looks like a bar of soap.... lol

I saw a dark gray one the other day when I was at the grocery store. I saw him getting out of the car to go into the store as I was going out. I asked him how he liked his new Solstice. He said he thought it handled like a POS compared to the MX-5 and said he wished he would have listened to his wife. He said it is a fairly nice car and he likes driving it, he just wished it had better handling. He said he picked this car because it looked "manlier" than the MX-5 and overall he really liked the body styling, just lacked in handling.

Other than that one, I have not seen any others with the exception of the one at the auto show.

I was reading a review somewhere a couple months ago between the MX-5 and Solstice. They came out essentially tied at the end of the test but they said "at the end of the day the MX-5 is the one we didn't want to stop driving" so even though it essentially tied in overall results they still preferred the MX-5 because it was "more fun."

mysql101 03-12-2006 05:38 PM

They look bad ass when you're not driving it, but when you get behind the wheel, it's lackluster. It's a lot of plastic and not much thought seem to have been put into positioning things. Even opening and closing the top is a hassle when compared to the MX-5.

Also keep in mind some dealers are charging 5k on top of msrp right now, so give it a few more months before they're all over the place.

snizzle 03-12-2006 06:58 PM

That's a good point... the supply is being kept low for a reason right now

Rhawb 03-12-2006 07:29 PM

I've been bouncing around ideas for my next car for a while (lease isn't up until June 07, but I might as well be prepared) and I'm really starting to like the Solstice, but I'd definitely prefer a Sky. As much as I love it, they really screwed the pooch on trunk space. Something like 1.6 sq. ft. of space with the top down and not a while lot more with the top up. I'm not expecting to be able to carry my entire wardrobe plus a load of groceries, but geez, come on guys, at least make it able to carry ONE small suitcase. That's the only thing keeping me from being VERY interested in either the Sky or Solstice.

snizzle 03-12-2006 08:41 PM

BTW, I read that Saturn is charging MSRP (in other words, no markup b/c of low supply heavy demand) ... even for the 1st Skys to hit the lots. For once paying MSRP sounds good.

If it beats it in handling, build quality, refinement then that's a win IMO. Mazda has been building the MX-5 since '89 so it has a little more experience than GM in this department. Form following function is good looking IMO not a pretty face that doesn't deliver the goods.

I'm saying the comparisons have been very close. I never said the MX5 wasn't winning the overall. It is the better roadster.

IMO, the MX-5 is an ugly car.... and the pretty face is where the consideration starts for me in a vehicle.

Can you really say the Solstice doesn't deliver even if it doesn't beat out the MX5 in every category in a few mags?

We shall see...

I'm only going on what I've read. I'd like to take the Solstice for a test drive and see for myself.

The Opel version looks very nice:

This is almost exactly what the Saturn Sky will look like. Put the Saturn badge in place of the Opel and you've got the car that'll hit Saturn showrooms soon. I've seen it in person and it's simply gorgeous.

Rhawb 03-13-2006 09:47 PM

I want a Sky SO BAD - damn you, absurdly small trunk! I'll have to check one out in person. Maybe (just maybe) I can make it work!

DARKMAZ8 03-14-2006 08:15 PM

The front of the soltice looks like turd pooh!!!!
