EdwardsB 07-03-2009 03:40 PM

After taking the engine apart twice, going through 3 glow plugs and resurfacing the housings...SUCCESS!!!

https://www.rx8club.com/picture.php?...pictureid=7990

I will post a video tonight of the engine running for two ~20 second intervals! I need to work on tuning, so it will hold idle. It has little vibration and sounds great running!

bse50 07-03-2009 04:31 PM

You win!

EdwardsB 07-04-2009 12:31 AM

Here is the promised video...hopefully have a full length video next week after tuning. Anyone with nitro experience that wants to offer advice on tuning, I will gladly take it.

Here are some pictures of the final engine in my album.

dozer 07-04-2009 12:40 AM

soooo are you gonna mass produce it? i really want one

EdwardsB 07-04-2009 12:52 AM

the thought never crossed my mind, if I could find a machine shop that would do CNC for a reasonable price it is a possibility for small runs (I can buy the rotor and rotor housing premade already.

I'm not a full time machinist (new hobby of mine) and have to remake a lot of parts due to stupid errors, so for me to mass produce by hand would cost a lot due to scrapped parts. The e-shaft took me 5 attempts to finally get right :shocking:.

Just a rough guess would put the price ~$1300 or so (mostly machine shop fees and OS Engine parts). For a new rotor and rotor housing it is $240 and you need two, so the kit would already be at $580 for existing OS Engines parts.

Here is a price page for some of the OS Wankel Parts

I could look into producing the custom parts for sale and leaving the OS Engine parts up to the consumer as well as a full kit? I would not even be looking for a big profit because I enjoy this type of work. I wonder if they would sell at that price?

Thanks again everyone I'll think this one over.

dozer 07-04-2009 01:10 AM

pretty pricey, but you gotta pay to play! i wanna see that thing push an rx8

EMart11b 07-04-2009 12:10 PM

This is one of the coolest threads on the site.

Rotr8 07-04-2009 01:37 PM

Lookin good Brent, guess what I got an extra of in the mail,,,
we can scan it in to get the lines of the body then surface model over top of it,,,

EdwardsB 07-04-2009 01:55 PM

awesome man, that woudl be many time easier than trying to make a model from scratch! I know once this is tuned I will want to tag that extra rotor onto the existing design. I do have the materials necessary...

Bartste 07-05-2009 11:22 AM

Amazing !!
Great job :-)

MaRxtin 07-05-2009 08:55 PM

WOW, Congratulations mate, BRILLIANT, FANTASTIC.

You should be real proud of yourself..you are VERY Clever to persevere.

Thought about a production line??

ASH8 07-06-2009 11:19 PM

Forgot to ask...what is it's engine model designation???

A "2B" or a 3X

EdwardsB 07-06-2009 11:30 PM

thanks everyone, I appreciate it a lot!

I was talking about production a few posts before, but for pretty much just a SWAG (scientific wild ass guess) I would put it around $1300-$1500. This would probably result is very little interest. If I could find a reasonably priced machine shop I would have no problem producing them for those interested.

Each of the OS engines have a displacement of 4.97cc so for the two of them it would be 9.94cc.

Could that make it a 10X, 1X or .1X? It would be nice to have a name for it.

pdxhak 07-06-2009 11:47 PM

Absolutely brilliant! Love the sound and appreciate the effort :) Great job!

ASH8 07-06-2009 11:53 PM

Well it is close enough to a 10CC Twin Rotor.

I would call it an E for Edwards...

So it would be a .1E

EdwardsB 07-07-2009 12:08 AM

thanks

.1E, I like it! thanks ash

RXallan 07-07-2009 12:18 AM
