Saleen S7

What is the deal with this car? I know it looks awesome, I know it has butt loads of performance, but is it too be taken seriously? I have read a few articles and threads on various forums and the consensus seems to be that people would rather take their money to more mainstream car companies.

I guess the thing got a bump in power this year, haven't found any un-biased test data yet though. I would guess that this thing could run with the best of them though. What do you guys think of it.

pretty crazy looking..but i like it:D i've never heard anythign bad about saleens....wonder how much it goes for (probable in the 400k range or so i'm guessing)

RXE16T 01-02-2005 01:20 AM

Outside of the US, Saleen does not have a name or a rep........... personally, as nice as the S7 is, I would still go 'mainstream'.

shelleys_man_06 01-02-2005 01:26 AM

The S7R is featured in many of the world's top racing venues, such as Le Mans. It has a proven track record, so I would most definitely take this car seriously. Kudos to Steve Saleen and his monster of a creation.

wow that is a lotta dead presidents to get one of those..i think i'd get something else first (well probable a whoel lot of something elses first:p)

pretty damn good stats for skidpad and 0-60 and 1/4. but for the price i don't think i could ever justify getting one (oh and i am really really poor so i could never get one:p)

shelleys_man_06 01-02-2005 01:38 AM

It's a Saleen, so you know you're going to have to dig all the way to the duodenum to afford one. Hell, the S-281's are expensive for a Mustang, but people buy them anyway. Would I buy one? No thanks. There are much better things than investing in a $400,000+ car.

RXE16T 01-02-2005 01:47 AM

Say Lamborghini or Ferrari, and people know what you're talking about.
Outside the US, say Saleen and most people will be like, WTF?

As good as the car is, both on the track and on the street, it doesn't have the badge appeal befitting of something which is close to half a million..........

army_rx8 01-02-2005 02:44 AM

i think i'll save the 400k and buy a house..granted the house isn't very good down the 1/4 mile (it's still going as we speak...so far it's 60' time is 23 years and counting) and it's skidpad g is 0.0 :p hehehehe

zhizoe 01-03-2005 12:57 PM

If you're not buying a super car for the name and badge, save your money and get an MT900: http://www.moslerauto.com/cgi-bin/mo...t900/main.html

shelleys_man_06 01-03-2005 09:56 PM

Mmm. The car made in cyberspace. The Mosler looks like something from a cartoon, but man is it sure fast. Hopefully, they can update it with the LS7. Unfortunately, the MT900 is a straight-up racecar with barely any luxuries, compared to the Saleen S7, which comes off more as a Louis Vuitton bag.

army_rx8 01-03-2005 10:00 PM

ouch no one liked my house joke....damn...i know my jokes suck but i thought that would've gotten a chuckle or two (maybe ... dare i say three?) :( aw well...haha i laughed at it :p

murix 01-03-2005 10:35 PM

The problem with the rationale with the thinking I see here is that we are not one of those who can afford this car. You are still thinkning of it as a car to get you around. People who buy this kind of stuff tend to think in other terms. They also usually own those 'name brand' cars you mention as well. It is not like you buy a $400k car by stretching your budget.

Oh, and for the money, I personally think the Saleen does quite well for itself, especially with its race record.

zhizoe 01-03-2005 10:51 PM

That's essentialy what the MT900 is, a race car they've made street legal. A damn good race car I might ad. But you can't beat that price. You can buy two for the price of an S7, one for the track one for a daily driver. Or you can pay la-z-boy and the fishman 200K to design an interior and audio system for you. Also, you're dealing with a well known engine, should make the parts easier to find. Fun fact, Warren Mosler is currently a congressman for the US Virgin Islands. I've known his daughter Sada for a fewyears, she's a fun kid.

My favorite article on the MT900 was this motortrend comparison where it broke 9 out of 11 motortrend individual records. 0-60 in 3.13 11 second quarter mile. Crushing the murcielago in pretty much everything: http://www.moslerauto.com/media/Eprint.pdf

shelleys_man_06 01-04-2005 12:39 AM

Yeah. I have an issue of Motor Trend where they compared the Z06, Mosler MT900 and the Saleen S7. Of course, they were going to pick the Z06 over the other two for its value. ;)

The MT900 is an awesome car, and if they keep campaigning it, I'm sure it will develop a winning pedigree. The best thing about it is its sheer weight. I believe this car weighs much less than the RX-8, which explains its insane numbers. It's hard to make a supercar that doesn't cross the line between street and race; Mosler just barely put his fingernail over it.

mikeb 01-06-2005 12:36 AM

mainstream or not
I have seen a s7 in person and it is breathtaking
love it

canaryrx8 01-06-2005 10:17 AM

The Saleen gets pretty close to Mclaren F1/Ferrari Enzo numbers, for about a 1/3rd of the price, what's not to like? I've seen these go for under 200,000. I'd love to see one of these in person, they look stunning just in photographs alone. I thought there was a british car called Noble or something that is pretty sweet as well, but I don't hear much about them.

Edit: Google is good, here is a link to the Noble M12

bowman 01-06-2005 10:35 AM

I read a review of the Saleen S7 in Road & Track (bought it for the RX-8 article) back in Dec '03. Keep in mind that the $400+k includes first class airfare, lodging at the Ritz-Carlton, and custom fitting of the seats and controls. Not to mention a 50 state legal car that makes a 3.3s 0-60, and a 11.8s 1/4 mile, with a top speed of ~220mph.

army_rx8 01-06-2005 11:15 AM

oooo the ritz-carlton...didn't know they custom fit the seats to you...wht if you gain a lot of weight..will they adjust teh seats for free for you...or will you have to fit the bill?

haha that's one good insentaze to stay in shape..."i can' tgain weight i can' tafford to ship my car to have the seats adjusted;)" hahaha

lilbigman 01-06-2005 12:22 PM

lol I made the rear grill on that s7 (auctully for the first 10 s7's including steve's personal ride )
Along with a bunch of other air intake housings ,and air box's .

Man that car is sexy!!!

Overport 01-06-2005 04:17 PM

The S7 is America's first real attempt at a pure supercar to battle the Italians with. They came away victorious, the car is absolutely stunning...and fast as hell. Its just as quick as an Enzo, but you never see them compared with eachother for some reason. The car is built very close to where I grew up in Irvine, CA.

I agree... I saw one in a luxury showroom full of Lamborghinis, Porsches and Ferraris, and the S7 made them look positively PLAIN.

SHOWOFF 01-07-2005 09:25 AM

It's the FASTEST production car in North America. I will be taking a trip to the Saleen production line (I'm a Saleen rep for a Ford dealer) to see how the whole thing takes shape. I am VERY impressed with the car although it is highly overpriced.

The car is simply a work of art though.

I think I would probably just go with the Factory Five GTM instead for about 1/10 the cost. That way if I wreck it, I don't cry quite as hard. :) The interior is fairly crude but I'm sure you could drop a few grand for a custom interior at an upholstery shop if that's a big deal. LS# series engine, porsche transaxle, 2200 lb. midengine car...yummy.
