The CobbAP with MazdaManiac tune is recommended. You log real world street data over a number of evolutions and are emailed tunes to install with the CobbAP.

Next would be the one-time Racing Beat tune, but you have to send them your ECU.

Cobb AP with a MM tune, although you won't really see a huge gain it is an extremely useful tool to have.

wcs 06-10-2010 07:23 AM

^^^ do you even have one?

I personally saw a gain of 13 hp and that was on a tune with the timing set 3degrees retarded for my nitrous and on the rich side to prevent failure of the high flow cat.

I've seen 20+ hp gain on another 8 that didn't have a catalytic ....

Not to mention the MM tune gets rid of all the dead spots you may have in the rpm sweep.

EDIT EDIT EDIT !!!
It just occurred to me while I was on the crapper after I posted this comment that I have no idea how much HP gain I received from the original MM tuning service.
This is the service you receive when you buy the product and go through all the STFT, drive cycle stuff and data logging that you send back to MM.

I've owned the Cobb AP since ... well prolly since you could first get it from MM.
First of all (as mention already) the Cobb AP is a great device on its own right. It has all the data logging and monitoring options you could want. Simply put, to me it was worth the 500 dollars just for that.

So saying that, my comment above was actually referring to a dyno day with Jeff doing custom tuning on the RX8's here in Toronto.

So digging out my old dyno's

My baseline dyno was 172 hp - Stock

2 years later was 189.96 hp - Added hi flow cat and Racing beat CAI

So you could argue about the hi flow cat adding some HP but I would recommend that if you are going to get a custom tune that you remove your factory Catalytic and go with a midpipe of some type.
CAI as we all know is a 0 gain effect.

Breaking down the costs.

Cobb AP + MMCC Tuning 594.00 usd
Custom Tuning + Dyno Time (Group deal) = 180.00 usd --> And if your lucky MM might not charge you for the Custom tune if you buy the Cobb AP from him at the time of the Dyno Day (that means just dyno time cost!). ;)

Sooooooo
Leaning towards the more expensive total, of 780.00 usd +- you get
1) 10 - 20 hp
2) eliminate dead spots
3) A very useful tool for monitoring your car
4) Actual dyno of your car performance

= No brainer to me.

Just say'n

I realize you're new to the forum and all... but you seriously didn't think this had been covered in the 7 years that this car has been available? Not one existing thread? Just searching "chip" came up with like 20 threads involving performance chips on the first page of search results.

I should've said in comparison to gains on other cars. My problem is I cannot compare my specific 8 to a non tuned version as I purchased the car with the AP stuff already all done. Compared to a couple of factory tuned 8s I test drove, my car is noticeably smoother.

That being said, 10-20 hp is a nice gain for the 8 but there are so many piston engines out there seeing a lot more bang for the buck when it comes to ECU tuning. I know my wifes Saab 9-3 usually sees 210 hp up to 250ish after a Maptun / BSR / Hirsch tune. That's 40ish hp for ~700 usd.

^^^ Agreed
Have you ever looked at the gains you can get for diesel trucks by the way of an aftermarket performance tune.
Insanity.

2010 ECU upgrade

I do not know of any, based on the low sales figures for the series 2 RX-8 don't expect any anytime soon.

alnielsen 04-14-2011 05:47 PM

What about this company? http://dptune.com/index.html
Or do they only tune the S1?

Tamas 04-14-2011 06:03 PM

There is this thread where the guy with the nick dynotronics1 is apparently with a company who do tune the S2 cars...

I have the racing beat race tune. The car recent to almost 10k and has nice steady acceleration all the way to the rev limit. I shipped the pcm out last Friday and got it back today. It cost $295 + shipping there and back. I definitely felt a difference when driving it today.

terch1 04-14-2011 06:33 PM

Damn phone....I meant to say revs to almost 10k.

This discussion is about tuning the S2 RX8. RB doesn't offer that service.

nycgps 04-14-2011 07:44 PM

the S2 ECU is completely different than the S1.

Has new controls, new setups, new chips. etc.

and yea based on the "low" sales figure it does not make much sense for any well known company to spend their R&D funds into making the current system work on the S2

which ecu are you talking about? I've been searching online and I found a COBB one but it's for Mazda 3 -and 6. It doesn't say specifically for rx8. Is there a specific one I should get? If so can you please post a link to it? Thank you
