RX-8 or Golf R32

well i've come to a dilema...i am considering trading the 8 in for an R32...not for sure yet but i still need to do a test drive.

anybody have any input on the R32. i love my 8 but i am really liking the R32.

Ike 12-07-2004 03:58 AM

It's a nice car, but I see no reason to trade an 8 in on one...

Mr. Ed's rx-8 12-07-2004 04:10 AM

well i'm not sure what i would get for my 8 if i sold it out right or took it to carmax? all back to stock of course.

EZZY 12-07-2004 05:36 AM

test drive it first before making any decisions.
totally different car.
have you looked at the Audi S3? more potential for performance upgrade :) and it looks better :p

RXE16T 12-07-2004 05:36 AM

R32 Golf? R32 GTR maybe, but not the Golf........

My friend has an R32 and we swapped cars couple of times just for fun. R32 is a fun car to drive! Nice acceleration, handles well, tight turns, definitely more torque than the 8, good brakes, and nice acceleration thru the turns due to its all-wheel-drive. On several occasions, I was unable to overtake the R32 at speeds pass 90.

Even though the car is hella fun to drive, I wouldn't compare it to the 8; the "fun" factor is different, you know what I mean? The 8 still looks way better, feels tighter thru turns, less lean, and easier to drive. But like I said, it felt different. If you could afford it, I'd say hold on to your 8 and pick up the R32 :D

My 2 cent,... hope this helps.

Not sure what that implies too? I count 7 TSB's for the 04 RX8 (http://alldata.com/TSB/33/04334191.html) and 1 for the 04 R32 (http://alldata.com/TSB/62/046279AT.html). I have a 02 GTI thats APR 93 Chipped and a 04 RX8. Both cars are extremely fun. I have had no problems with my VW and it has only been in for the recommended service. My RX8 has been in 3 times for unscheduled work. Anyways, I say buy whatever makes you happy, go to www.vwvortex and you can get some opinions there. I wanted a R32 before I got my RX8 but could not find it at any of my dealers due to the limited production. I am just as happy with my purchase of the RX8.

mysql101 12-07-2004 10:13 AM

I don't see any reason to change.

If your RX-8 was a beater and was 5 years old, then why not.

But your RX-8 is about the same as the R32, so it's not like you're changing from the RX-8 to a new C6 vette. I don't see why you'd want to take a 5+ grand loss to get into a VW.

DreRX8 12-07-2004 10:24 AM

I like the R32 but I am not a big enough fan of notchback styling to get one--definately not to trade an RX8 in on one. If you ever face one in a street drag the RX8 has what it takes to run with it--their 0-60 times are nearly identical--it will come down to driver--the R32 is definately a lot easier to launch.

canaryrx8 12-07-2004 10:47 AM

you should trade it in for one of these: http://motortrend.com/features/perfo...12_0401_tuner/

heh

mysql101 12-07-2004 10:52 AM

wow, pretty awesome specs. The only problem I see is the 25k price tag on the stage II (550 hp), for the money, I'd rather get a C6 even if it was slower.

I'd have to agree, if I had money to piss away I'd love to go with one of those but try and make it look as stock as possible and make it a stage 3. I'd love to rip around town in an innocent looking car like that and then take it to a track or maybe even play at a stoplight and just blow some porr saps doors off. They don't show it on the website but they do have a stage 3 and it is crazy. The C6 is my "real life" (in other words, I think I have a real chance of owning one someday)dream car so I too would have to go for that if I was looking long term etc. If I was looking short term and had just won the lotto or could afford to just blow money out the door I'd be all over the HPA. :)

well found one today that i am gonna go test drive...that will make the final decision for me. we'll see how things go.

rotten42 12-07-2004 11:45 AM

Man, I can't get over how obsessed people are for speed. There is so much more to a car than 0-60. Why get rid of a car because its a bit slower than another.

..that's like having a girlfriend who is perfect in her proportions, great face, and a wonderful personality....but you trade in because the skanky hoe down the block as bigger tits.

that's cool man, you really can't go wrong either way. I personally have always been fascinated by all the former RXs so owning a rotary was something I always wanted to do. I like both cars, but the rotary and the styling won the 8 for me. :) Good luck in your decision, just be mindful of your finances, sure would suck to lose money and not be happy with your choice on top of that.

Some people are in love with speed, and thats all there is to it. However, I would not get rid of my 8 for something that is only marginally faster, and generally not regarded as a better car than the 8. If you want an all wheel drive car go for the EVO or the STI. Both those cars are far better than the R32.

Mr. Ed's rx-8 12-07-2004 01:02 PM

i am also seriously considering an EVO...i love the motor in those cars and have worked on the 4G63 in the past.

and its not an obsession for speed. it all a matter of prefrence. i originally looked at the R32 but the dealer markup was rediculous. now i have an opportunity to get one with less then 5K miles on it for around $25K. my 8 is paid off so i just would like to get that much for it minus the parts i have on it. i would plan on selling the few aftermarket parts seperately. in the event i do decide to sell the 8 i'm not sure if i shold try to sell it out right or try carmax...i need to research into this more. this is definitely not something i am just gonna jump into. i might wait untill the new year to do anything.

not to mention cheaper better looking and much faster..the r32 has very paltry performance numbers anyway.

kilted 12-07-2004 02:13 PM

I used to sell Volkswagons and the only thing I would say is, are working power windows important to you?

Rxdriftingaction 12-07-2004 02:21 PM

dude... don't do this..!!! R32.. hm... it's a good car.. but it's not worth that much.. around 30k right..!! with that price u can buy a evo.1!! y don' t u just buy a evo?! it's much faster than R32 .. and it's cooler than that.. u also can hang out more friends.!! so.. evo is a better choice !! i think..!!! think about evo .before too late.!!

Mr. Ed's rx-8 12-07-2004 02:47 PM

i am considering the EVO also. i could care less about carting friends around...they never give me gas money anyway. but its not gonna be right away now casue i can't make it to test drive the R32. hopefully tomorrow i can get to the dealership to check it out.

They might be more established, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they are far better, geesh, where does that come from? The R32 isn't as bad as you make it sound, it's basically the same as the EVO/WRX/AWDwhatever only it's a hatchback as opposed to a sedan. Same concept, AWD, loads of boost, etc.., just done differently. folks shouldn't be so quick to blast the R32 though, it's a pretty sweet car in my opinion. You might want to think about the EVO MR if you haven't already, it'll cost you close to the same and it's pretty sick for what you get as I will agree that they did price the R32 a little high, if they had priced it closer to the SRT-4 or even just knocked off about 5-6 grand, it would be a bargain.

Loads of boost in the R32? It's an N/A engine and that would be the number one reason I wouldn't get one, acceleration wise it's more on par with the WRX than it is the STi or Evo. The only reasons for buying an R32 over an Evo or STi that I can think of are having to have a hot hatch, having to have a nicer interior, or just having a weird thing for german cars. Yes it's a nice car and it shouldn't be knocked, but it gets outshined in many areas by its competition.
