More stupidity at the alter of fuel consumption numbers....
Yahoo! Be damned wear, be damned oil consumption, be damned engineering common sense... and burn oil like it's water just because. At least the rotary engine does SOMETHING purposeful with its oil before burning...not just let it slip by the piston rings to never be seen again! |
Yeah my boss has a couple of Porsches and I was surprised to find out that oil consumption was normal. Porsche has a pretty cool oil level monitoring solution as well. But also if you own a Porsche, you just stop by the dealer and they add some Mobil1 0W-40 for free in about a minute.

How much is too much? Audi, BMW, and Subaru stick firmly to the statement that oil consumption is a normal part of a car’s operation. Subaru considers a quart burned every 1,000 to 1,200 miles to be acceptable. Certain Audi and BMW cars’ standards state that a quart burned every 600 to 700 miles is reasonable. |
That's a good article from Consumer Reports - well documented and well explained. I wonder how much oil those mostly German offenders consume compared to the Renesis.

Cars under warranty shouldn't wear tires, wear brake pads, or consume fuel either. Manufacturers say that this is normal. I think it isn't. It isn't acceptable that the normal public be subjected to such things for a car under warranty.
They should just take the bus instead. |
Honda recently issued a warranty extension to eight years or 125,000 miles for 2008 to 2011 Accord and 2010 to 2011 CR-V four-cylinder engines. Honda said it had found that sticking piston rings could lead to higher oil consumption if the engine is revved hard when cold, when combined with prolonged usage of low-quality gasoline. Some consumers we followed up with told us they would not have bought their oil-burning cars had they known they would be checking their oil so often. |
And after that we wonder why the cars come with more and more electronic nannies. "Hey people are complaining about burning oil while picking up groceries 2 corners over with their 400hp minor miracle of modern engineering."--"I see. Perhaps we should add a computer function where the vehicle takes a day off, drives itself to an open road and just spends a bit of time being a happy car?"
