Ricers?
 

Until coming to this forum I thought I understood the term. But when I heard RX-8 owners using the term, I got the idea it didn't strictly refer to all Japanese cars. A brief Google search came up with dozens of definitions, all of which were very similar. I have to admit, the more I read, the more I chuckled! :D And then there were the pictures! :D:D:D

I didn't attach any pictures, but I'm refering to the Honda Civics, etc., with the enormous wings (spoilers), air dams and garbage can sized exhaust pipes. All show, no go.

I don't see any rice there. Some people think adding a body kit is rice. For me it's rice if it's over the top. But then over the top is a opinion...

To me Rice = intercoolers with no FI, NO2 bottles and purge sprays with no NO2, Boost gauges with no boost, gigantic GT wings on anything but a GT car, and so on.

Edit: That roof scoop on the Ferrari better be functional...

I guess I would say Rice is NORMALLY a imported car fixed up very poorly

I am sorry but the Ferrari is a tragedy. I respect most ricers but there is no reason for that. Italy has my permission to start bombing the US.

Rice- A term that once was referred to those that had non-functional parts (glued on roof scoop, fake IC) is now used for peoples dislikes. "Oh, he has 18in wheels RICE", "OMG, his calipers are red RICE", "I don't like your nicely modified yet sleek body-kit, RICE".

i saw a riced up wrx today.. this thing was nasty riced.. i wonder if i can find a photo since he had a custom tag.. "IMPREZV" i was like.. wow.. huge fart can exhaust and a nasty body kit.. nasty..

Everybody has their own definition of what rice means, partly because the definition stems from the distasteful, and taste is purely subjective.

Personally I define rice as something made to make your car "look" fast without actually being able to back it up. For example plastering your car with stickers of parts that you don't have, somebody mentioned fake intercoolers earlier, that kind of stuff... and then there's the plain stupid like putting a "VTEC" badge on a Ford Probe...

I can't even think of a single "nasty body kit" for the WRX. The occurence of riced out WRXs seems to be very low and I've never seen one in person either. Odds are that fart can was an expensive and high quality exhaust though.

Well, i cant find a pic anywhere yet, but the rear bumper was what really made me puke. It had big slanty squarish diffuser like thingies (like the front of the NRF kit for the RX-8) on the back and the pipe was literally huge and coming out on a diagonal and upward like you'd see on a honda civic or something.

EDIT: and the comment I made at the time was "wtf?! you don't rice up an impreza!"

I don't see too many around here at all. This is probably the second I've seen, if it wasnt the same one I saw the first time.

Still sucks what happened to your car and the way people harrassed you a couple years ago on this site and I know you put a lot of work into it... But it's an excellent example of rice :p

Dont know where the term originally came from in the racing circles, but it came from the word RACE... but since it doesnt race, the word is changed to RICE.

Basically its a term used for dud parts, or the overall "dud" feeling of the car.

Examples has already been posted before...

TypeR, TRD, Nismo, stickers on a Hyundai.
Tuner stickers (bilstein, Greddy, HKS) etc. on any car when you actually dont have the parts installed.
Roof Scoop in an FF civic.
Fake intercoolers.
Fake meters all around the cabin, none moving at all.
"amplifier" exhausts.
Empty NOS bottles.
"Carbon-Fiber"-Patterned/Painted FRP Bonnet/Wing.
Bodykits with a thousand useless "intake" inlets, eg. civic with a back shoulder intake... I call em "trunk coolers", or "reverse vortex generator".

Besides being used to mean dud (fake) parts, it eventually also encompasses "useless" parts that doesnt do crap, and in some circumstances, even add un-needed dead weight to the alleged "sports" car.
Including...

Custom super bright chrome fake blue lights.
Neon engine lights
Neon underglow
Wheel Spinners
Flame throwers

Basically, a car without those parts would perform better.

Then of course there are relative ones...
The best example of which would be trunk audio system...
Some people argue it enhances the audio, nothing to do with performance, but they like a high powered audio system... ok I wont say its rice, cant see it for most of the time either.
But showing your tricked out audio through a clear transparent acrylic trunk lid... rice.

But I think the general term that could be used to describe "ricers", looks can be deceiving; they look fast, but they arent.
