Redlin on the 2009 RX-8
|
From what I have read, the rev limiter is only there until the engine warms up.
|
Just looks odd in 3 sections then its there at 8.5K odd.
|
it's true that it's a variable redline. Once the engine is warm, it goes to the normal redline of 8500.
I didn't realize it was going to go all the way down to 5.5k either. The only pictures I had seen had it somewhere between 7 and 8k. |

Yup, those red bars indicate how high you should rev until the engine is fully warmed up. Once the engine begins to warm up, the red blocks turn off in sequence until it's fully warm and they vanish.
The early shots we saw didn't have the big blocks of red turned completely off, but each little segment can go on and off.. I'm not sure what it's really like, but i think it'll be more gradual than just a big block turning off. |
Also, not a fan of the missing oil pressure gauge and the continuation of the 1976 calculator LED style display on the center console.

Isn't it more analog than that? Or at least more sampled, if you know what i mean?

Where is the oil pressure gauge ?
|
they don't have a oil pressure gauge, who need oil pressure gauge any way the standed ones are designed so it doesn't move as much is it should be
|
I guess probably being one of the few people to actually drive this car already, it wont actually let you go above that red line. It's actually a limiter not a guideline.
|
^^^Since you've driven one, do the different gear ratios give you any different feel at all?
|
This variable redline seems to indicate that 10k rpm is available once the last block disappears. :eyetwitch
|
Just noticed how reverse is in a different spot...

How long did it take to get it past the limiter and into redline country? I don't redline until my car is fully warmed up but I'm wondering if I should wait longer.
I believe it is using the MX5 transmission. Yeah thats the one that everyone was saying is stronger than our MT right now. Guess time will tell. |

Redlining
Hi all,
Check out my thread on my new '09 https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discussion-3/ive-got-2009-rx-8-gt-148308/ As to the variable red line: On cold start it takes less than 1 mile or about 3 minutes for the first segment to disappear - just as the temp gauge barely starts to more off the detent. The last segment doesn't disappear until the temp gauge is about 1/3 scale (1/2 scale if normal op temp). I ....gently.... if that's possible tested the 2nd segment red line and it does do a fuel cut out about 1/3 the way into the bar segment. Steve |

For those that don't know (I wouldn't recommend trying to find out!), the current (or at least my '05) RX-8 will cut your fuel if you try to rev beyond 4-5k when it's really cold as was discussed in a previous thread. It just doesn't have the red limiter lights like the new one. Don't ask me how I found this out. :suspect:
