It won't ever happen, despite silly-assed rumours from the likes of Road & Track (who should know better than to print that drivel; it makes them as bad as Motor Trend). the Program Manager for the Miata development has explicitly stated that the Miata will never have a rotary, and that it's counter to the whole philosophy behind the Miata. A rotary RX-7 convertible is a definite possibility, but the Miata will always be a 4 cylinder, lightweight, affordable, convertible sports car. That's fact, from insider sources who have spoken at length with the Miata program manager and the management teams.

Regards,
Gordon

And they can't just name the MX-5 otherwise. If it will get a rotary engine, than the name should be RX-5.... 1) there already was a RX-5 (large coupe) 2) MX-5 is a statement

I don't expect a rotary powered Miata. I expect the Miata to pretty much stay the way it is with minimal characteristic changes. Instead, I would expect a convertible RX8 or RX7 to come out in addition to the Miata.

i heard or read somewhere that there's going to be a rotary powered miata. sorry if i'm wrong.

Sure, there are alot of rumors on websites, and there are plenty of magazines that have mentioned it as a possibility. But that doesn't mean that it will happen. Take those for what they're worth.

there are also rumours that it will get a steel roof like the Mercedes SLK

cueball 08-31-2003 02:17 PM

The steel roof would be nice, but it goes against the Miata’s minimalists approach. It also might increase the price to a premium that people might not be willing to pay.

P00Man 09-01-2003 04:50 PM

wouldnt it be smarter to make the roof aluminum, to keep the weight down?

darn, that sucks, it would be awesome to see a special miata with a rotary in it, a very limited production vehicle

and convertable rx-7 would be sweet too, as long as it doesnt look like any of those terrible drawings
