Popular Science April 1966 "Wankel Fever Hits Detroit"

Sorry if its a repost. I did a quick search and didn't see anything.

Found an issue of Popular Science dated April 1966. It was really cool to read. It compared the U.S. built Curtis-Wright RC2-60 Rotary engine to the typical Wankel Rotary engine.

It was desined with side intake ports like the Renesis and sited reasons for its superiority over peripheral ports based on port overlap for fuel economy.

And there was all kinds of talk about how its about to blow up huge in popularity in Detroit. Lots on comparisons to V8 engines.

If anybodys interested in reading it, I can try to scan it to upload.

An article was posted by Zoom44 a couple you years ago about 2 of these engines in prototype Mustangs.

Wait till you see what the Wankel will do to Detroit in 2016 :fingersx:.

Paul :)

Why must you do this to us?!!!!! I was perfectly happy skimming threads as always, and BAM a taste of a hint and now I want MOAR! Such a tease!:crying:

Ha ha! I did not intend a tease, rather I was working with the timeline we have all been given from the sports car chief. Although I know him, I WILL NOT ask sensitive questions.

I would think we will hear and see neat stuff before that.

Paul.

Ah. I asked Jim O'sullivan this weekend at Rolex in Daytona about a new rotary. He said "thats the one question I can't talk about besides to say we are working on it". LOL at putting the man on the spot :D: Same question got posed to Moro-san, with a much more positive response

Good find Paimon. Thanks. That's the article page for page. Much easier than trying to scan it.

Since 1966...? Interesting to know that rotary started to come out then.

^ rotary, more specifically, wankel engines date back to the late 1920's from a design perspective, and the first implementation was in the late 1950's.

apparently the cure for "Wankel Fever" is "Detroit Iron" lol

What I found interesting is the Curtiss-Wright RC2-60 was a torquey little motor:

160 lb-ft at 1000 rpm
180 at 1500
205 at 3000
210 at 4000
196 at 5000

I guess I'm not too surprised since it was a 2.0L, but still... I bet it drank gas though.

LeJeune123 01-31-2013 12:54 PM

He also said it settled into a smooth 800rpm idle. Damn mazda mine still wont idle that good. Lol Only 6k revs at max though. Didnt it say that it used the same fuel ratio as the buick 400ci?
