Picked up Evo X

Funny thing is after I picked up the Evo X, (My 8 is loooong gone) Puente Hills Mazda sent me a notice about an urgent fix that is couple months overdue... And on the part that says VEHICLE: MAYDA RXX8 WTF He mispelled Mazda and the Rx8.
:banghead:

no pix of the evo x?\

RedefineRX8 04-10-2008 11:08 PM

this thread is useless without pics

CarAndDriver 04-10-2008 11:12 PM

Pics and price. I saw EVO X's new super cheap. Pricing themselves out of their market and in a bad economic time.

Can sorta see my X there, next to a huge meet of Evos at Buena Park.

JRichter 04-11-2008 10:49 AM

Looks good, the only one I've seen in my area was a blue one on 2 occasions. Did you just go up and buy it on the spot or did you order or anything?

Driving impressions?

Cody Red 04-11-2008 10:54 AM

congrats on purchase.

We had an MR2 & RX7 meet there.
The RX7's invaded the MR2 meet that happened to be at the same parking lot as the EVO's.

We had no clue that it was the usual meeting spot for the Mitsu's
"Hey . . .how did the evo guys find out about this?"
"Um, the Evos are here evey week"

Coolest AWD group I have ever met.

You must be really strong to pick up an EVO X.

Aznxkaiser 04-11-2008 05:59 PM

The thing is the Evo X is running extremely rich from the factory tune, many people feel the power tapering off after 5k RPMs. That is why people are gaining incredible amounts of power from the Evo from minor bolt ons, more than the 9 did. No one knows the limits yet as it has not been reached but the only major flaw I see is the weight. Overall the car has evolved.
The chassis is more rigid, and more responsive. Not only that but the SAWC and AYC make the car a handling monster, on a completely different plane of handling than most cars. The car is stiffer than the previous generations, thus providing better overall handling.

The driving experience has changed as many have noticed. But the car is not less "raw" it is just more evolved. The previous gen Evo's had a more of a kick when hitting boost, but that is not completely gone on the Evo x, just the feeling is weaker. The X has virtually no turbo lag, I can hear it spooling from 2000 and with Mivec on both Intake and Exhaust, the car runs smoother. The main problem right now is the factory tune, it is running extremely rich.
I just broke the car in and when pushing it through the corners, the car does not break loose at all. It hugs the road and never lets go. Its a point and go car, I think those who transition from the RX8 to the Evo X will be very pleased. Torque is a blessing and this car has it all. No more downshifting to climb a hill.

Appearance will always be subjective. I think it looks more aggressive and sharper than the previous gens. If you see it in person, you will notice how it looks like somekind of shark or a bulldog or something. I compared it to my friends aggressive STi look, and the Evo X had better lines and more of an evil look. The chicks dig it too.
The room in the back is HUGE. The trunk however is small. Like RX8 small, maybe a bit larger. The seats are incredibly comfy, the side bolsters are so high that you cant fall out of the seat.

Overall I am very veyr veyrvryevryevrey happy with the transition, no regrets at all. The car is mod friendly, has a somewhat of a great community.., handles great, good looks, big room, great power, and a real step forward from the 8. I encourage RX8 owners to test drive one, you might pick one up on the spot.

How much did you pay for it?

Easy_E1 04-11-2008 09:05 PM

I went for a ride in one that had just been tuned on the dyno. 402 WHP. I was pleasantly surprised as to the handling and power of the car.
Congratulations on your new purchase.

What were the mods?

Not really sure what had been done to it. I believe the turbo was larger and intake/intercooler were different. We just jumped in to get some more beer at the store. I know it was running 28 psi of boost.

Aznxkaiser 04-11-2008 11:40 PM

The stock turbo is expected to produce at least 370-380 AWHP after someone the ECU gets cracked and people are able to get tuned.
There is a TSB out for the car already somewhat fixing the factory tune of the car, leaning it out a bit and fixing the boost drop off after 5k rpms. Someone dynoed it and gained 15WHP over stock with it. I am going to get it done tmrw.
Thanks for the comments guys, I still love the RX8s, trying to encourage my friend to buy one.

They are very nice carts, and I'm jealous you got one!

The one thing I have to point out is the fact that all of the Japanese manufacturers are now flipping the Audi grill upside down and slapping it on their cars...

I agree but it's nothing new for Japanese car stylists to borrow German styling cues- they've been doing it for years.

The rear (and perhaps sides) of the EVO X is clearly Alfa Romeo (though not German) which I think is a good thing that looks fresh even when I see the regular Lancers on the street.

Can't wait till they start selling Alfa's in the US again and hopefully the quality will be good enough to match the price.

Another one interested in what you paid if you'll share. Also interested in insurance premium.
