DETROIT – A person briefed on the deal says General Motors Corp. will sell its Saturn brand to former race car driver and dealership chain owner Roger Penske.

GM has scheduled a 9 a.m. EDT conference call with Saturn General Manager Jill Lajdziak. The person briefed on the deal said Penske will be on the call.

Penske has said his company, Penske Automotive Group Inc. of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., is interested in the Saturn brand.

The person briefed did not want to be identified because it has yet to be made public.
Not sure if it is true, but I think it would be a good thing if someone so heavily into racing (and not just NASCAR, see below), takes over design and production of a brand. Changes would definitely take place, and the cars produced are more likely to have appeal than a random banker group imo.

He is clearly successful, and I have to believe that his heritage and passion will translate into the brand far better than other investment group types.

From Wiki:

Penske Racing now operates a NASCAR team comprising Kurt Busch, David Stremme and Sam Hornish, Jr. They also operate an Indy Racing League team composed of Hélio Castroneves and Ryan Briscoe. Previously, they ran cars in the CART series that included some of the best drivers of the time, including Gary Bettenhausen, Tom Sneva, Mario Andretti, Bobby Unser, Al Unser, Al Unser, Jr., Emerson Fittipaldi, Rick Mears, Danny Sullivan, Paul Tracy and Gil de Ferran. After many years of trying his team won the Daytona 500 in 2008 with Ryan Newman driving.

In 2005, Porsche set the stage to make a comeback in sports car racing in the United States and chose Penske Racing to run in the LMP2 class of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). The Penske Porsches took center stage in 2006 winning immediately, including victories at Mid-Ohio finishing 1-2 ahead of Audi (competing in a higher classification) and the annual Petit Le Mans, a 10-hour showcase event held at Road Atlanta. His team scored an overall victory in the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2008.

Penske also ran a Pontiac Riley Daytona Prototype in the 2008 Rolex 24 at Daytona, with Kurt Busch, Ryan Briscoe, and Hélio Castroneves driving. The car was run in conjuction with Wayne Taylor's SunTrust Racing. They finished 3rd overall.

For 2009, Penske has suspended his participation in the American Le Mans Series, switching to Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series for the full season. They are using a Porsche-powered Riley with Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas driving.

Penske recently purchased the old Matsushita air conditioning plant in Mooresville, NC and reconditioned it to consolidate his racing empire. Now, all of Penske's racing operations are under one massive roof with his IRL, NASCAR, and ALMS teams sharing over 424,000 square feet (39,400 m2) of space encompassing 105 acres (42 ha). The shop includes all the necessary pieces to compete on the highest level in all of his racing endeavors, including a state of the art, in-house, wind tunnel. To complete the facilities, Penske imported over one million tons (250,000 pieces) of Italian marble.

Roger Penske is also an avid car collector, and owns many rare American and European automobiles, including a Ferrari FXX, of which only 30 were made.

Fixed :)

But yeah, I don't see what changes he would make, just that I seriously doubt he would fall in-line with the 'typical american car'. It might be worse than current, but I doubt it. I will definitely be watching this.

It's more official. From what they say, it will take a while before he is influencing design it sounds like, but he says they can be profitable from day 1

Sounds like a done deal now. Can't be any more mismanaged than it is now...Penske sounds like he has a good business track record. The Hummer sale on the other hand sounds like a disaster.

Should be interesting what Penske Racing does with Saturn. Hopefully we some really cools cars in the near future :)

funny thing about saturn was, GM was trying to make saturn a "young/teen" brand thing, like Toyota/Scion. but I was like wow, was there even a car out of saturn brand that is for young/teen ? seriously.

I'm pretty certain that Penske is going to do what GM did; bring in cars from manufacturers that don't have a presence in the States. For the first couple of years, at least.

I thought I read that they would keep selling GM cars for the first two years.
